One particular spot came to mind — a promontory where I had taken a deer the year before. It was deep in the woods and overlooked a flat perhaps two hundred yards wide, but stretching hundreds of yards each side of the high point. Two hundred yards to my right and slightly behind was an old winch left in the woods during the 1920s at the end of a logging operation. To my left, the flat stretched a third of a mile to an overgrown field and Johnson’s pond. Straight ahead I would be able to look across the wooded flat to the rim or bench where the ground dropped abruptly all the way to the Goose Hollow creek. Deer being pushed in Goose Hollow would come up that long slope, break over the rim and come across the flat toward the promontory. It was a good spot, but a long hike in and a longer hike out if dragging a deer. The sky was a dome of frozen diamonds when Betty let me out at the top of the hill where an old logging road threaded its way into the woods. A single glance showed that the snow was unbroken, smooth and white, and that my tracks would be the first. It was a good half-mile, maybe more, to where I wanted to go, and I wanted to be there by daylight. In my younger years, it would have been no problem, but on this morning, with five or six inches of fresh snow, it wasn’t long before I had to stop and catch my breath and then slow my pace so I wouldn’t work up a sweat and then get chilled when I stopped. I cannot remember the first time I walked that logging road. It had to be when I was about six or seven, in the early ’30s. We always referred to it as the “Main Trail,” because at the far end, on the edge of an overgrown field, it ended at the steps of an old hunting cabin built before I was born. Today, it is called “Segar’s Cabin,” a much used reference point when making plans to meet for lunch or to start a deer drive. A hundred and fifty yards before I got to the cabin, another trail branched off to the left, taking me to where I wanted to stand. The dim twilight of dawn had invaded the woods, letting each tree take individual shape, separating itself from the dark mass that it had been short minutes before. Deer would be moving now as hunters came into the woods, and despite the trickle of sweat coursing its way down my spine, I quickened my pace along the trail, finally turning into the woods and following a low ridge to my stand. Once there, I shucked my daypack, dumped the snow from the bottom of the overturned pail, and settled myself down. It was light now, and I slipped a finger size .45-70 cartridge into the chamber of the Ruger No. 3, raised the breech-block and set the safety. I thought a lot of that little rifle. Weighing in a bit more than seven pounds with the Weaver K3W scope, it was short, easy to carry and extremely accurate despite the lightweight barrel. The single-shot wasn’t fussy about what I fed it, and any decent hit meant fresh venison in the frying pan. Even though I also had a .45-70 Ruger No. 1, with a heavier barrel and a dressed-up stock with checkered grips, it was often the GAME NEWS
