walking away.” At first I felt sorry for him, but then, I reasoned, he got an 8-point with a bow, something many hunters (me included) have never done. And the big one was still out there — for me. Any buck taken with a bow is a trophy, and JJ feels that way, too, but seeing a huge buck after shooting a smaller one is hard to take. The year before, he shot his best buck ever, on the last day of the regular archery season. So, two years in a row taking 8-points, and a total of four 8-points or better with a bow in the last six years, is hardly anything to be depressed about. I think he was down more because his hunting was over for the year than he was about the buck. With that being said, his most responsible and ethical shot was the one he didn’t take. To have a trophy standing in front of him, knowing that it would be a full year before he would be able to draw on another buck, having the bow in his hands and not having the slightest temptation to raise the bow and cross that line is the ultimate in being an ethical hunter. It showed he had the highest respect for the animal and for hunting. Yes, he felt depressed, but he never even considered shooting at the big buck. If everyone had those same values, there would be no need for game laws. I did my best to cheer him up. I told him that deer might walk under his stand next year with an even bigger rack. I stressed that the challenge and enjoyment of the hunt is what’s important anyway. Hunting can sometimes be a contradiction of emotions. The hunter strives for success despite knowing that success may end his hunting for the year. After all, it’s the anticipation and the process of pursuing the animal that gets us out of bed in the morning. I have to agree with my dad, who always said that he hunted more, hunted harder and got more enjoyment out of the years he didn’t get a deer. Dad spent more time in the woods than most hunters I knew, but with only a handful of racks on his wall. He learned early on that the shot not taken led to even more enjoyment and satisfaction than the shot that may have dropped a deer on the first day. I know that in my “unsuccessful” seasons I saw more sunrises and sunsets, spent more time observing wildlife or exploring the woods, and had more wildlife encounters than in those years when I got my deer early on. You won’t see that fox or coyote or that big flock of turkeys if you’re sitting at home with a buck in the freezer. Some years I was done early on the first day and, although I was pleased that I had gotten my deer, I hated leaving the woods when everyone else was still out there. I always hope for a long season that ends with a score at dusk on the last day, but in 46 years of hunting that has happened only once during deer season and once during turkey season. So, we take what we get and make the best of it. I can think of a much worse fate than spending weeks in the woods pursuing deer. One time, when I was in college I had a full day to hunt grouse on what was a pristine Indian summer day. The sky was a crisp blue and the leaves were at their peak. With a smile on my face, an apple in my pocket and the feeling that all was right with the world, I loaded my shotgun and started out. I wasn’t in the woods five minutes before I connected on a grouse, which immediately filled me with mixed emotions. I now had the chance to take a daily limit (a feat I had rarely accomplished), knowing full well that doing so would end my grouse hunting for the day. I resigned that from then on I would take only sure shots (back then I was naive enough to think there actually was such a thing). I passed on several of what I considered to be tough shots, thus extending my hunt GAME NEWS
