lands, needed to obtain a permit, which cost $49, along with the stipulation that he had to leave 30 black birch trees per acre for regeneration. Skip remembers going to a birch still his dad was operating at Colton Point, along Four Mile Run, at the Shrew Spring. Some men stayed in the woods with their stills, but Grant went home every evening to his family. Also, he would not operate the still on Sundays. The Four Mile Run still, which was located near the road, had been producing well, but when the still’s production slowed to almost half, it was thought that someone was stealing birch oil during the night. For the next week, someone stayed at the still throughout each night, in an attempt to catch the thief. After the week was over, no thief was caught, but oil production remained low. With jobs scarce and a family to feed, Grant turned to making a living by building and running birch stills. When the word “still” is mentioned, most people think of making moonshine. In northern Pennsylvania, however, there were many stills that produced birch oil.

water, it sank to the bottom. After the oil was discovered, Grant’s helper was so elated that he sang “We’re rich, we’re rich” over and over. The birch oil was put in glass gallon jugs, because metal containers affected the taste of the oil. On the way back to the horse barn, the helper accidentally banged the two gallon jugs together, with the full gallon jug breaking and spilling the recently recovered oil on the ground. No more singing. A birch still was a 6-foot-square watertight box made of 2-inch hemlock planks. If a leak developed between the hemlock boards, oakum was forced into the leak. The bottom of the box was covered with copper so it could sit over a fire. The still box was filled with black birch that had been cut. At first Grant used a horse to drag birch to the site, but he eventually replaced the horse with a 4-wheel-drive military weapons carrier. Tree trunks were cut into 6-foot sections, and the tender branches were tied in bundles with wire.
