vehicle and made it home. Grant was taken to the doctors and sent immediately to the hospital. Although Grant recovered from the heart attack, he was told by the doctor that he was to stay off the mountains. With a family to care for, Grant couldn’t heed the doctor’s orders. After recuperating, Grant was back out in Scotch Pine Hollow. At first the steep mountains were a huge obstacle, but the more he roamed the woods, the stronger his heart seemed to become. At the time, Skip was a young man, in the prime of his life, and yet he found it hard keeping up to his dad as they roamed the woods looking for stands of birch. Skip believes that Scotch Pine Hollow saved his dad a second time (first time from asthma). Back then, rehab was unavailable, and the exercise his dad received by climbing the mountains actually helped his heart grow stronger. Grant Cavanaugh died in 1984, but not from heart complications. The black birch tree came close to annihilation in the 19th century, but as mentioned, synthetically manufactured wintergreen oil spared the trees. Later, during the 1970s, the black birch was thought to be carrying a disease that affected other trees. This led the forestry department to have black birch cut down in the area where lumbering operations were occurring. Skip recalls incidents of a run-away horse, broken axles on the weapons carrier, injuries and many unusual times when working with his dad. He also has a
collection of items from his father’s still, including copper nails, a permit from the forestry department for black birch trees, and a vial of pure black birch oil, which Skip proudly opened to give me a small taste. The strong taste of wintergreen stayed on my tongue for a long time. When Skip was a young lad he hung a horseshoe on the crotch of a young sapling, and through the years the tree grew around the horseshoe. Many years later, Skip’s sons cut the tree down and gave him the section with the embedded horseshoe. This has become one of his most prized possessions. Grant operated birch stills from the late 1920s through the 1950s, but it wasn’t until after he was laid off from the railroad that he operated them for a livelihood. Skip remembers his dad telling him about birch stills on Asah Run, the Frying Pan, Big Tree Hollow, Goodall Fire Tower, Colton Point, Painter Run and Baldwin Run. Birch distilling was hard work with little pay, but it was a way men could support their families — just one of the many gifts from the forests of Pennsylvania.
