Couldn’t Resist
UNION — After baiting for a week we had a flock of about 120 turkeys coming to the site every day, and then we set up the rocket nets to capture and band some for the turkey study. On the day we were to begin the actual trapping, we got to the site early and everyone knew we had to be quiet, because the turkeys were roosting on the ridge just above the field we were set up in. Everything went smoothly and we were sure we’d capture a lot of birds. The best laid plans sometime go awry, though. We should have known better than to station PGC biologist Tony Ross in a law enforcement vehicle, as that was like putting an unsupervised kid in a candy store. Just after daylight, with the turkeys ready to come into the field, the vehicle Tony was in lit up like a fireworks display, with all the red, white and blue lights and the siren going off at the same time. WASHINGTON — After 10 years with the PGC I’ve finally learned not to ask questions that I don’t want answers to. I was discussing bears with students at the Monongahela Elementary School when one student said that there are also brown bears in Pennsylvania. I explained that some black bears have different color fur, much the same way people have different color hair. I pointed to a young lady and stated to the class that she and I are both humans, but she had blonde hair. I then asked them what color my hair was. Fitting Tribute
The Somerset County League of Sportsmen Clubs purchased 32 apple trees to plant on SGL 82, as a memorial for deceased WCO Stanley Norris. The work was done with Game Commission personnel and volunteers from local clubs. — LMO DAN YAHNER, LORETTO

Got Me!
BERKS — Waterways Conservation Officer John Sabaitis happened to be at the Southeast Region Office while I was purchasing my fishing license. I didn’t know that a plan had been hatched between him and Linda, who was selling me my license, to tell me I was on revocation. When Linda swiped my driver’s license, I could hear an audible bonk, which is the same noise my computer makes when something isn’t working. Without missing a beat Linda looked at me and said, “Do you know you’re on revocation?” Apparently, the look on my face was priceless. — WCO DAVE BROCKMEIER, MOHNTON

Road Trip
TRAINING SCHOOL — On a recent class trip we toured the new elk visitors center at Winslow Hill. The center will feature an interactive theater, educational program area and several trails leading to some terrific elk viewing areas. It is expected to open in September.
