about another inch lower than that. What caught my attention was when the 180grain round-nose load, with the same cases, same primers, same powder charge and very close to the same velocity as the 180-grain spitzers, hit about two inches lower than the spitzers. The variable between the 180-grain bullets (outside of the obvious visual difference) was in the length of the ogive (the radius of the curve of the bullet tip). The shorter the ogive, the longer the bearing surface of the bullet is in contact with the rifling. The greater surface area that is held by the rifling, the greater stress the bullet experiences. This could affect velocity, accuracy and bullet placement (in this case it was in placement). I reloaded those rounds the night before and, as it turned out, the next day, when I chambered them in the Savage and Browning, the bolts closed a hair snug, which meant that the bullet was biting into the lands of the rifling (you can tell by seeing the marks on the ogive of the bullet). But when chambering them in the Garand and Enfield, those cases offered no resistance (signifying longer throats and/or greater headspace — which is common on military rifles of that era). As I shot cases from each rifle, I marked the base of them with a different color permanent marker. When I reloaded those same cases that night, I could definitely tell which ones had been shot out of which rifle. The ones from the Enfield were the most resistant to resizing (they expanded the most) along with the Garand (being a semiauto it ejects a hot expanded case). The Browning-fired cases took less effort, with Savage brass being the easiest to resize. The fact is that as powder burns and the pressure of the gases increase, it pushes the cartridge case against the walls of the chamber before it propels the bullet out of the barrel. If the chamber size is on the larger side, then it takes time and gas pressure for that case to fill the size of the chamber, which takes energy away from the velocity

of bullet propulsion. With smaller-sized chambers, less energy is used for case expansion and more on bullet propulsion, therefore creating faster velocities. Now, if you couple this with bullet seating in relation to the rifling lands, or if the throats of different rifles vary (as in this case), velocities can also be affected. Those bullets that are farther away from the lands have more free-bore space, allowing more gas to escape before the bullet hits the rifling to create a seal. In effect, it loses gas that would have been used for greater velocities. What this reveals is that the chamber size of all these rifles varied. Using headspace gauges, chambers from smallest to largest, were in this order: Savage, Browning, Garand and then the Enfield, and velocity readings for all loads were in the same order. Or, in other words, the smaller chambers had the faster velocities. The same held true with the factory Winchester 150-grain Power Points. What’s also evident is that there is less velocity dispersion among rifles. I believe this is because the 150-grain bullet is seated deep enough to have free-bore space in all the chambers, but the tighter headspace still allowed less gas to escape and, therefore, had faster velocities. I have to mention here that the “Cartridge Overall length” (COL) of factory ammunition is designed to be short of the rifling. This is so all ammunition can work in all firearms chambered for that cartridge, while safely being held within SAAMI factory pressures. Pressure has a great deal to do with accuracy, and with most cartridges accuracy suffers when the standard pressure is exceeded. The thing about having bullets seated too far into the lands is that it can increase the pressures well beyond those specs, becoming dangerous. A pretty fair rule of thumb is that if you can feel a hint of snug just before the bolt bottoms down, you’ll be okay. But if you have to push the bolt down with some force, then you have gone too far and
