inches in reaction to the sound of the shot. To my dismay, the arrow hit high and the buck bolted and was gone before I knew what happened. Rattled, I tried to replay what had just taken place and thought about my course of action for trailing the deer. The shot was high to be sure, but it did hit behind the shoulder. I was about 16 feet above the deer when I shot, so the likelihood of hitting something vital was good. To top things off, the next day was a Saturday, so I would have all day to look for him if need be. It would be dark soon, so I quietly got down from my stand and searched for a blood trail. I wasn’t confident the high hit would produce an immediate blood trail, and I was right. I couldn’t find a single drop of blood, just some hair and some turnedup leaves. I was able to take up the trail about 30 yards from where I had shot the buck, but then it petered out. No blood, no turned-up leaves, no deer. I was upset to say the least. By the time I lost the trail it was just about dark and I realized I’d have to come back in the morning. A clear, starry sky promised low temperatures, so I rationalized he would keep until morning. I was back at the crack of dawn and took up the trail where I had left it. I didn’t have much to go by, except the deer appeared to be headed downhill to a marshy area where a small creek meandered through. Maybe, I thought, he headed for the cover in the marsh; it was a good place to start.

For once I guessed right, and in short order found my deer on the uphill side of the marsh. It was a good ending to a bad situation. When a deer “jumps” the string, it is not consciously dodging the arrow; it is instinctively reacting to a stimuli. The moment the deer hears an unknown and surprising sound, its flight instinct takes over and the animal’s split-second reaction is to drop or duck. At best, the arrow flies high and over the back of the deer, at worst the reaction turns a good, well-planned shot into a tracking nightmare. Deer reacting to the sound of an arrow being released will continue to be a predicament for bowhunters, but there are things that can be done to mitigate this problem. First of all, a deer that is likely to jump the string is usually an alert or nervous deer looking for danger. Deer become skittish for many reasons and are particularly jumpy under windy conditions, when any strange or sudden noise startles them. Sometimes, especially on quiet evenings, the rustle of a hunter’s clothes as he draws the bow can alert an otherwise calm deer, and there are other reasons. Today, more hunters are taking an interactive approach to their hunting and are using deer calls or rattling antlers to get the attention of mature bucks. When a deer perceives another deer to be in the area, it may investigate the sound it hears and approach a hunter’s stand at high alert. As a result of this heightened awareness, if a shot is taken, there’s a possibility of the deer reacting negatively to the noise of the shot. Hunters should be aware of the obvious signs of a nervous deer and
THE HARMONIC DAMPENER incorporated in the thumb wheel of this arrow rest, combined with other sound-deadening material on the limbs, riser and even the bow quiver, work to eliminate game-spooking noise.
