South American countries. When the stronger Mauser Model 98 came along, the 7x57 was also chambered in both the small ring and large ring version. The 7x57 cartridge was initially loaded with a 284-caliber, 173- to 175-grain round nose full metal jacket bullet traveling around 2,300 fps from a 30-inch barrel. For that day it was a high stepping cartridge with mild recoil, which with a 100-yard zero would drop only about five inches at 200 yards and 11 inches at 300 yards. Those long 175-grain slugs were renowned for their penetration, and the soft nose versions were great game getters. The 7x57 cartridge became a favorite for many hunters, and notables were W.D.M. “Karamojo” Bell who in the early 20th century used it successfully on most African game (notably elephants), as well as our own famous gun scribe Jack O’Connor, who praised it as an excellent cartridge for elk-size animals on down. As its popularity grew and subsided over the past 117 years, Remington chambered its Rolling Block, Lee, Model 30 and Model 700 in the 7x57. Winchester chambered the Model 54 and 70 in it. Ruger keeps it alive in its No. 1 single-shot and Model 77 bolt gun, and Dakota Arms also chambers for it. Europe has Kleingunther, Mauser, Sako, Husquvarnas and CZ, just to name a few. It’s also a fairly popular round for custom rifle builders. As good as the 175-grain round nose soft point bullet was at harvesting game at moderate ranges, it was the introduction of lighter spitzer bullets around the turn of the century that gave it a boost in velocity and longer range accuracy. 150-grain slugs could be driven from 2,800 fps to 2,600 fps, and had power and practical accuracy to harvest deer at 300 yards or so. Throughout the decades, the popularity of this cartridge has always been strong in Europe, but has fluctuated a bit in the U.S. due to the “magnumitis” syndrome. But as often happens, a new generation of sportsmen who feel that the butt end of a rifle doesn’t necessarily have to match the power at the muzzle end, have rediscovered the effectiveness of the 7x57. Over the past 30 years I have owned about a half dozen rifles in the 7x57, and although none of them have ever been a disappointment, I did have three favorites. My first one was on a small ring Mauser that I barreled up when in gunsmith school back in the 1970s. It carried a short 20-inch Shaw barrel, with an adapted Husquvarna schnabel stock. With a Leupold 4x compact scope it weighed slightly more than seven pounds and was a pleasure to carry in the field. That little Mauser shot well with anything from 139- to 175-grain slugs, but it would always hold under an inch with 145-grain slugs (as long as I loaded them long). My second was a push feed post 64 Winchester Featherweight with a 22-inch barrel and a Leupold 2-7x scope. It was handsome, well balanced and could deliver the goods. I carried that rifle a lot of miles and would have never sold it if Winchester hadn’t come out with a left- handed action. When that happened, I bought a stainless steel version in a .30-06 and had Mitch Schultz of Gunsmithing Limited rebarrel it with a 7mm Douglas barrel cut off at 21 inches. The barreled action was finished in a Teflon coating. It carries a Redfield 27x, and my favorite load is a 150-grain spitzer loaded long (3.130 inches) in necksized cases, with IMR 4350 or RL 19 pushing it at around 2,700 fps. It consistently cuts clover leaf groups at 100 yards. If I had to keep just one bolt rifle to hunt with
