That’ll Teach Him
TRAINING SCHOOL — While on field training assignment I was taking part in an in-season stocking of pheasants. At the park at Canoe Creek a hunter was following our truck to see where we were going to release the pheasants. As we were driving back out he was standing along the road, partway back into the field where we released a crate of pheasants, and he sheepishly asked if we had anything to unlock a vehicle door. In his haste to find out where the birds were going to be released, he had locked his keys, along with all of his hunting gear and gun, in his truck. Just a reminder for next year: It’s unlawful to discharge a firearm within 150 yards of a Game Commission vehicle whose occupants are releasing pheasants. — CADET STEVEN J. ACE, HARRISBURG

Costly Lunch
WAYNE — As I walked out of a local diner during bear season, two individuals arrived in the parking lot with a bear in the back of their pickup. I greeted the two and asked where they got the bear, to which they gave different answers. Again I inquired, and they became even more vague about where the bear was taken. One individual mentioned the name of the owner of a property where I was currently doing an investigation concerning bait. I immediately went to the property and found the entrails of a bear at the location where the bait was strewn on the ground, and found a treestand near the kill site. I contacted the two suspects and informed them that their bear was being confiscated. After hearing what the penalties would be, one of the men commented that he never should have listened to his buddy when he wanted to stop for lunch. — WCO FRANK DOOLEY, TYLER HILL

TRAINING SCHOOL — The 28th Class underwent cold water and ice rescue training with the Fish and Boat Commission. The “dry suits” that we wore were so warm that getting into the icy water was actually a relief. I didn’t want to be “rescued.” — CADET DAN MURRAY, HARRISBURG

Will Be Missed A Big One
CHESTER — An experienced local trapper told me he trapped five coyotes in one township last year and the largest weighed 70 pounds. Yes, folks, there are coyotes in this county. — WCO SCOTT FREDERICK, SADSBURYVILLE PERRY — WCO James Brown retired after serving the agency and the citizens of our commonwealth for more than 30 years, first as a deputy in Bradford County and then as the WCO covering the western Perry County district. I’ve been proud to work alongside Jim, and I can’t think of a finer man who ever wore the uniform of a WCO. To say that I will miss working with Jim is an understatement. Since Jim’s retirement his wife, Ginny, now has twice the man and only half the paycheck, while I have the same old paycheck with twice the district. Godspeed, Jim.
