SomerSet — During bear season Deputy Brian Dermer and I were checking hunters when we noticed an individual in a treestand and parked the vehicle to check him. While we were walking Deputy Dermer noticed smoke coming out from under the hood of my vehicle. I told Brian it should be okay, but after he went back to check it out he found smoldering leaves trapped between the skid plate and the catalytic converter. I’m sure glad Brian used his investigative skills to check out the source of smoke or we would have had a long walk home. — WCo BRian WitheRite, MeyeRsdale Due to upcoming construction of a new Northwest Region Office building, funded through a Growing Greener Grant, we moved our office to a temporary location just up the road. We also had to relocate the bear check station normally held at the region office. Many of the bears we check are from Butler, Armstrong, Venango and Clarion counties, so we held the 2010 check station at Moraine State Park in Butler County, near the DCNR Bureau of Forestry Region 2 Office. Moving a big operation such as a bear check station is a tremendous job, but thanks to the Butler and Lawrence county Food & Cover Corps crews, and tremendous cooperation from the folks at Moraine State Park, everything went smoothly. I especially want to thank Gil Gilson in the DCNR Region 2 Office and Moraine State Park Manager Dan Bickel and their staffs for their hospitality. — PGC ReGion BioloGist RoGeR n. Avoided a Disaster

c umberLand — Hunting pressure seemed low for the first Saturday of the flintlock and winter archery season this year. I guess it didn’t help that New Year’s Eve was the Friday before that first Saturday. Deer hunting enthusiasm may have been dampened somewhat by the Eve’s celebrations, and the taste for venison temporarily replaced by pork and sauerkraut for New Year’s Day. — WCo tiMothy l. Came to the Rescue

York — As resident instructor, every Sunday night when the cadets returned to the school I had to have them weigh in. Often, other cadets would place their foot on the scale when a cadet was being weighed, to make him or her think they ate too much over the weekend. While one cadet was weighing in, I couldn’t help but notice him turn around to see if someone had their foot on the scale. Unfortunately, no one had. — WCo MiChael J.
