advantage of weight forward is that the arrow tracks better, especially in the wind, and it results in greater penetration. Take a tournament dart and check its balance. The weight is heavily concentrated in the front of the dart for stability and accuracy. The same holds true with an arrow. I have added additional weight to the front of my arrow and had it fly flatter than a lighter arrow, simply because it straightened up faster out of the bow and thus retained more energy transfer from the bow. Victory Archery is marketing an arrow called VAP (Victory Armour Piercing). The VAP has a tapered Penetrator broadhead insert that is equal to the diameter of the broadhead ferrule but is larger than the arrow diameter. As the broadhead enters the target the larger insert moves material out of the way so the small diameter, thicker shaft that follows has greatly reduced drag on its surface, resulting in approximately 25 percent greater penetration, making it an excellent hunting shaft. Carbon Express, Trophy Ridge, Easton, Beman, Gold Tip and Victory are among manufacturers that are using new technology to produce better high tech arrow shafts. Arrows come in different straightness and weight ranges, as well as spine, (spine is the stiffness of the arrow). Of the three, spine is the most critical. Arrows that are straight and weigh the same but have different spines will not group well. Arrows that are identical in spine (stiffness) will normally produce the best groups. Vanes Over the past several years vanes have shrunk in size with the popularity of the Blazer vane. With today’s bows and hi-tech arrow rests, large fletching is not required to stabilize an arrow. For crossbow shooters there is a trend to smaller vanes as well, with 3-inch and even some 2-inch vanes producing excellent results in crossbows. Flex Fletch is now making 2- and 3-inch vanes specifically for crossbows. Some interesting advances in vanes have been the Zeon Fusion vanes from Norway Industries. The material in the vane gathers light and transmits that light to the edge of the vane that glows. The idea is similar to the fiber optics used in bow sights that takes light and transmits it to the pin, making it glow brightly.
