other muffled gobble. They couldn’t have been more than 70 yards away. Before I could make another call, a hen flew down in front of me, landing about 15 yards away. Yelping occasionally, she strolled out to my right. A hen I didn’t see fly down began calling from behind and to my left. Another turkey sailed off the roost and soared far off to my left, and a pair came down together and sailed back toward the bank. The tom gobbled softly and I sent out another series of yelps. Then for several minutes everything was quiet. The jinx was holding on. I was just about to yelp again. And, suddenly, the gobbler was right in front of me, less than 25 yards away. He was clucking loudly instead of gobbling to attract his hens. I quickly clicked off the safety and

positioned the shotgun on his vitals. When the boom of the 12-gauge shattered the calm of the quiet spring morning, the gobbler crashed to the ground. As I filled out the tag and admired the gobbler’s beautiful feathers while I sipped a cup of coffee, I could still hear the other gobblers sounding off from the posted ground. Maybe this one’s muffled gobbles had something to do with the louder toms’ dominance in that area. Maybe not. I was a happy hunter as I toted the 16-pound gobbler with his nearly 8-inch beard and ¾-inch spurs to my truck. He had helped me overcome the opening day jinx I had feared. 
