L ebanon — At the Myerstown Gun Club I picked three volunteers to participate in a skit with HTE instructor Glenn Reichardt, who was playing the role of a poacher. After some careless handling of the wooden training rifle and telling each student the plan of going out to shoot some deer, one student, John, politely said he didn’t want to participate. Glenn asked him why he didn’t want to join in, and he said he did not like the way Glenn was handling the firearm and he wasn’t going. That was the first time a student refused to participate in this skit. Glenn picked another student to complete the group. When the training skit was over, Glenn and I complimented John for standing his ground and being a good sportsman. — WCO MiChael J. reeDer, PalMYra

Lesson Really Sunk In

bedford — During deer season, Deputy Eddie Mills and I encountered two guys with loaded rifles on an ATV on SGL 49. We explained the law in regard to the guns, and both said they knew it was illegal in a truck, but not an ATV. We also explained to them about roadhunting and shooting from the road. The next day we set up a decoy operation near the spot of our encounter the previous day, and our first shooter was one of the individuals from the day before. Both men were in the truck and looked a little embarrassed when I approached the vehicle. The driver/shooter asked if I needed to see his information. “Not unless anything has changed from yesterday afternoon,” I replied. The only thing he could say was, “I guess I should have paid attention to what you told us yesterday.” — WCO Chris skiPPer, everett SomerSet — I had been trying to trap a bear for research purposes, but every time I checked the trap the bait was gone but there was no bear. I put up my trail camera and finally discovered that the bait had been taken by a fisher that preferred donuts over porcupines. — WCO WaDe kraMer, sOMerset Centre — While patrolling the first day of the spring turkey season, Deputy Roy Shaffer and I checked three hunters on private land adjacent to the Bald Eagle State Forest. Two were carrying the expected shotguns, but the third was armed with a tree planting bar and a wad of nursery wrapping paper. In addition to their hunt, they had also spent the morning planting 200 white oak seedlings they had received from the Game Commission’s Howard Nursery. As the former Forest Nursery Operations Manager for the nursery, it was gratifying seeing our product being put to good use to improve wildlife habitat. — WCO Cliff guinDOn, hOWarD
