(the Spanish “dolar” before the Revolutionary War and the U.S. dollar came about). Two doeskins were worth “one buck” (still used as slang for the dollar). In 1716 the Cherokee of South Carolina traded 35 deerskins for a rifle, 1 for 30 rounds of ammunition, and 5 for an axe. In 1770 nearly 800,000 pounds of deerskins were exported from the colonies, mostly to England. There are reports of pack trains from Shamokin (an Indian village, now Sunbury) and Bedford loaded with half-dressed deerskins, and of barges carrying deerskins on the Susquehanna, Schuylkill and Delaware rivers. In 1804 the wholesale price for a deerskin ranged from 75 cents to $1. By comparison, beaver skins were priced at $1 to $2.50, otter at $1.50 to $4 and red fox at $1 to $1.10. During World War II Pennsylvania hunters were encouraged to donate deerskins for the war effort. More than 7,000 skins were donated in 1942. They were used to make 28,000 pairs of gloves. In early times deer meat was preserved for winter use by drying over a slow fire. This “jerked” venison, or “jerk,” was also taken on long trips. In 1828 Miss Eliza Leslie’s Directions for Cookery was published. Her book contained diagrams for cutting up deer, and recipes for making roast saddle of venison, venison steak, venison pastry, venison ham, cold venison hash, venison sausage and venison soup. In 1721 Pennsylvania’s first deer

hunting regulations were enacted. They protected “bucks, does, fawns, or any other sort of deer whatsoever” from January 1 to July 1. The fine for taking deer out of season was 20 shillings. Native Americans were exempt. Later, shorter deer seasons were set. By the end of the 1800s deer were so scarce in Pennsylvania that many people stopped hunting them. It just wasn’t worth the effort. In 1906 the Pennsylvania Game Commission began stocking whitetails to restore the herd. Fifty deer were brought from Michigan. Over the next 19 years about 1,200 deer were bought from operations in Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, as well as in Pennsylvania. In 1907 the state’s first “bucks only” law was passed. In 1928, to control the deer population, the first antlerless deer season was opened in 51 of the state’s 67 counties. Buck season was closed for the first time. In 1938 buck season was closed for the second time in the state’s history; only antlerless deer were hunted. In 1959 the white-tailed deer was named Pennsylvania’s state animal. 
