meat by the shot pellets. At that time, the old Iver-Johnson was the only gun we had in the house, and relatively speaking, shotgun shells were expensive. So Dad went to one of my older cousins who had no compunction about shooting rabbits or squirrels with a shotgun, and borrowed a neat Remington pump action .22 rimfire rifle for which he purchased a couple boxes of Long Rifle cartridges. He sighted it in to put the bullet dead on at about 40 yards, and asked my mother how many squirrels she needed for supper. The answer was always three or four. Now, we have all heard the story about the man who was a good game shot, but exceedingly poor on targets. There is a good reason for this, which I’ll not go into at this time, but I will say Dad was an outstanding shot on game with either a rifle or his old Iver-Johnson. And just about every afternoon during the season he would ask my mother how many squirrels she wanted for supper, and then he would go and get them — no more or no less, and all of them shot through the head. The woods and hedgerows abounded with gray squirrels, and when the season was open, we could depend on Dad to put meat on the table whenever my mother so expressed her needs. By 1937, with war clouds on the horizon in Europe and work at the shop beginning to pick up, Dad had long since returned the Remington to my cousin, and in November of that year presented me with a brand new bolt action Springfield-Stevens Model 86A rifle chambered for the .22 rimfire and equipped with a cheap but rugged receiver peep sight, along with a front sight that had two interchangeable aperture inserts and one post insert. It was my first introduction to peep sights and I loved them. At 40 yards a squirrel’s head fit nicely inside the

smaller aperture. Dad despised the peep sight for having too much room around the front sight. Regardless of Dad’s opinion, when he gave me that rifle he also passed the squirrel hunting disease on to me. Neither of us was aware of it at the time, especially Dad, because neither of us even realized there was such a thing. In fact, it was years before I realized I was afflicted with the malady. What is squirrel hunting disease? Well, sometimes the description of those who have it gets carried away to the realm of unbelief, but basically the man or woman who has such an affliction will absolutely refuse to look at a squirrel when carrying a shotgun. They insist upon a rifle — often one chambered for the .22 Magnum — equipped with the best iron sights money can buy, or a good quality scope with a fine crosshair reticule. These people with squirrel hunting disease are staunch believers in precision shooting — the precise placement of every shot in the head of a squirrel. This means they never shoot at a moving squirrel, for fear of causing a cripple, and consequently might pass up shots at four or five squirrels to make a precise shot on the one squirrel that stops to study its surroundings. To use a shotgun on these squirrels would be heresy. I have been told, and here you have to use your own judgment, that these afflicted squirrel hunters are so intent upon their purpose that they will sit motionless in the woods for so long that a spider can spin its web from the bill of their cap to the muzzle end of the rifle barrel while waiting for the right squirrel. I have also heard, although it may be an exaggeration, that these same hunters will sit motionless for so long that moss will grow on the north side of their face. They claim a squirrel will notice the slightest movement. Whatever the truth may be, I’m certain that to the dedicated rifle-carrying squirrel hunter, the required preciseness of bullet placement for self-imposed success is on
