like a ghost in the mist just 75 yards below me, in the field. His “song and dance” continued for half an hour, but he stood his ground. This old warrior had no intention of moving in on me or my decoys. I gave him every call I had and he answered by melting back into the far corner of the field and eventually sashaying up an old tram road above me and exiting stage right. One hour into the hunt and I was disappointed but not discouraged. All diehard turkey hunters know that things rar ely go as planned. I took a deep breath, wiped the rain drops off my scope and glasses, took a few sips of water and nestled back against my tree. Soon another hen appeared behind me and putted and cruised back and forth. I looked back over my shoulder and saw her moving away from my position. Ten minutes later I brought out my peg and slate call and scratched out a few clucks and yelps. Two hundred yards below me and into the woods I heard a deep gobble. Resisting the temptation to call, I stood my ground. Five minutes, then 10 elapsed, and I wanted to call more, but I didn’t. This turned out to be a smart move, as he finally appeared in the field, down and to my left, and he had a jake in tow. I was more than confident that my time had come. For the next 45 minutes the big gobbler strutted back and forth, periodically charging and chasing off his companion. No matter what call I used, he would only move a few steps and strut constantly. Soon he tired and cruised downhill. Having never been one to go by

the book, I pulled out all the stops. Forget about all that stuff one hears about always calling softly and very sparingly. Those who are “married” to these techniques are more likely to be “plucking” their gobblers from the freezer bins of Giant Eagle than from the wilds of Penn’s Woods. Time and time again, when a boss gobbler loses interest and begins to leave, I bring out my old Lynch box call and give him the loudest, most obnoxious excited hen calls on the face of the earth. Each time I cranked the box call, he replied with a thundering gobble. His struts became quicker and he juked all over the field. As soon as he gobbled, I would hit him louder and longer with the box call. Between calls he chased the jake up and down and over and around. Soon, the pair took off “on a rope” in my direction. They closed the 100-yard gap to my decoys in less than two minutes. My senses were on maximum alert. When they got to 30 yards, the jake put on the brakes — I guess he did not want to confront the gobbler decoy. He putted and turned a quick about-face. The big gobbler immediately stuck his head up and glared in my direction. It was now or never. I brought up my Remington Special Purpose, 3-inch chambered, autoloader and touched the trigger. The mature gobbler lifted off but then descended in a hail of cascading feathers. Two hours and fifteen minutes had ended with an incredible trophy and enough satisfaction to make even a humble man quite proud. As I sprinted to collect my prize, I was delighted to see that he was a gorgeous tom — all of 20 pounds with a beard that would stretch the tape to 10½ inches. When it comes to spring gobbler hunting, it doesn’t get any better. 
