Jefferson — One  day  after  catching  a  nuisance bear in my culvert trap, I overheard my son, Elias, tell his vacation Bible  school class all about the bear and what I  had done to it (pulled a tooth, placed ear  tags, etc). I was impressed on how accurate  and articulate he was about the bear. Now,  if I could train him on all the paperwork of  my job, I might have time to catch more  bears. — WCO andreW d. TrOuTman, summerville Mercer — At  a  local  deer  processing  business an individual came up and introduced  himself.  Usually  introductions  are  followed by a series of questions about laws,  hunting  areas  or  tales  of  the  hunt.  This  time,  though,  I  was  pleasantly  surprised  when the Army colonel informed me that  he was the great grandson of Pennsylvania’s  first game protector — Big Joe Barrier. — WCO laWrenCe r. HerGenrOeder,  GrOve CiTy cuMberLand — Just  before  the  regular  firearms deer season, it’s common for me  to map out a “first day plan,” but it never  works out. As soon as the incidents that  need  immediate  attention  come  in  and  we’re pulled in so many different directions,  the plan goes out the window. Next year’s  plan is “there is no plan.” — WCO JOHn FeTCHKan, neWville L uzerne  — Since  the  Game  Lands  shooting range use permit regulation went  into effect, I’ve noticed a big decrease in  the amount of nonhunters using the PGC  range in my district. It also seems to have  cut down on the amount of damage at the  range. Every shooter who I spoke to agrees  with the permit regulation, and most say  it’s something that should have happened  a long time ago. — WCO Gerald Kapral, plains

Pleasurable Meeting

MiffLin — I’ve  never  seen  the  level  of  junior hunter success that I have this year.  In bear season and the first week of deer  season, five junior hunters killed bears, and  more  than  a  dozen  junior  and  mentored  youth hunters killed their first bucks. The  first week of deer season was topped off by  a  9-year-old  who  took  advantage  of  the  Mentored  Youth  Hunting  Program,  as  well as the antlerless license transfer from  a mentor, to kill an 8-point buck and a doe  on the same day. — WCO JeFFrey G. mOCK, leWisTOWn

Better Late Than Never

Lackawanna — Deputy Robert Krukovitz and I were sitting in a field on night  patrol, in his new car, monitoring spotlighters, when I decided to step out and stretch  my legs. When I tried to get out, though, I  discovered the doors were locked. As Bob  tried to find the button to unlock the doors,  he set off the car alarm. So with headlights  flashing and horn blowing, the deer that  were in the field were long gone by the time  Bob figured out how to turn the alarm off. I  asked him if it was safe to get out now, and  he assured me it was, so I opened the door  and again the alarm went off. After laughing until my eyes were tearing I turned to  Bob and said, “Well, I really like your car,  but it’s not night patrol proof.” — depuTy rOn Kelley, TaylOr
