armstrong — Deputy  Fred  Cessna  Jr.  and I were on routine patrol the day after  Christmas when we drove past the spillway  that drains Keystone Dam. Fred noticed a  deer swimming in the spillway and we both  marveled at how a deer got into this predicament. This deer had to jump an 8-foot  fence with three strands of barbed wire on  top and then jump off a stone wall that was  35 feet high and land in the water. Knowing that this deer would die of exposure,  Fred  and  I  crawled  under  the  fence  and  started yelling and throwing rocks behind  Tug of War the deer to force it 100 yards downstream  Try telling the hunter on SGL 219 who  to several low-walled dams. The deer went  was  trying  to  get  the  rabbit  he  had  just  over  both  dams  without  hesitation  and  shot  from  his  beagle  that  a  dog  is  man’s  swam  to  shore  and  scrambled  to  safety.  best friend. We both agreed that saving this deer was  — lmO RiChaRd lupinsKy, East smithfiEld a great Christmas present. — WCO ROd BuRns, Kittanning Local sportsman Mark Lansberry called  to  report  an  injured  albino  deer  that  he  discovered after deer season. After I had to  dispatch it, we debated whether or not the  red gods curse someone for killing a white  deer. Mark told me that in 1995 he took  a shot at an albino and missed, and as bad  luck  would  have  it  he  didn’t  harvest  his  next deer until 2010. I mentioned that I’ve  apprehended  three  different  individuals  over the years for poaching piebald deer,  and  I  think  they  would  agree  that  their  luck was not so good. — LMO Dan Yahner, Loretto Franklin — After setting a bear trap on  top of a mountain in an orchard, I realized  that it might be difficult to remove the trap  due to the bad terrain. Unfortunately, when  the bear finally went in the trap, a week’s  worth  of  rain  made  it  impossible  to  get  my truck to the trap. With the help of the  landowner, we were barely able to get the  trap out with a tractor. In the future I’ll be  setting traps at the base of the mountain. — WCO Justin Klugh, st. thOmas

EriE — Shayne Hoachlander responded  to a skunk inside a residence call, and after  being unsuccessful at trying to entice the  skunk into a box trap, Shayne decided on  a new approach. He crouched down a short  distance from the skunk and began to talk  to it. After a short period of time the skunk  allowed him to gently nudge it into a cage  for  removal.  I’m  impressed — we  have  a  skunk whisperer. — WCO laRRy m. smith, ERiE
