2012-13 seasons and bag limits proposed
HE	Board	of	Game	Commissioners	 at	 its	 January	 meeting	 gave	 preliminary	approval	to	hunting	and	 trapping	 seasons	 and	 bag	 limits	 for	 2012-13.	Highlights	include:	allowing	 Mentored	Youth	hunters	to	hunt	fall	 turkey;	 expanding	 bear	 hunting	 opportunities	in	urban/suburban	WMUs;	 opening	WMU	4C	for	bobcat	hunting	 and	trapping;	and	opening	WMUs	2G	 and	4D	for	fisher	trapping. The	public	may	offer	comments	on	 all	proposed	2012-13	seasons	and	bag	 limits,	and	other	Board	proposals,	up	 until	the	Board’s	next	meeting,	April	 23-24,	 at	 which	 time	 the	 Board	 is	 scheduled	to	finalize	the	2012-13	seasons	and	bag	limits	and	other	January	 meeting	proposals. Board proposes to retain split rifle deer seasons The	slate	of	deer	seasons	proposed	 for	 2012-13	 retains	 the	 split,	 5-day	 antlered	deer	season	(Nov.	26-30)	and	 7-day	 concurrent	 season	 (Dec.	 1-8)	 in	the	same	11	WMUs	that	had	split	 seasons	last	year. The	 Board	 also	 gave	 preliminary	 approval	to	retain	the	use	of	crossbows	 in	the	archery	deer	seasons.	This	action	was	made	by	removing	the	sunset	 date	inserted	in	the	regulations	when	 crossbows	were	first	permitted	in	the	 archery	deer	seasons.

Pike Run Wild Pheasant Recovery Area closed The	 Board	 gave	 preliminary	 approval	 to	 close	 the	 Pike	 Run	 Wild	 Pheasant	 Recovery	 Area	 (WPRA)	 while	 retaining	 four	 Wild	 Pheasant	 Recovery	Areas	for	2012-13.	 The	agency’s	Ring-necked	Pheasant	 Management	 Plan	 calls	 for	 the	 creation	 of	 WPRAs	 for	 the	 purpose	 of	restoring	self-sustaining	and	huntable	 pheasant	 populations.	 In	 these,	 the	 agency	 has	 been	 releasing	 wildtrapped	 pheasants,	 with	 a	 goal	 of	 achieving	 a	 density	 of	 10	 hens	 per	 square	mile. “Stockings	in	the	Pike	Run	WPRA	 were	done	from	2005-7,	and	follow-up	 surveys	 through	 2011;	 densities	 are	 one	 hen	 per	 square	 mile,”	 said	 Carl	 G.	Roe,	Game	Commission	executive	 director.	“In	light	of	the	area’s	habitat	 characteristics	 and	 low	 pheasant	 densities,	 and	 in	 keeping	 with	 the	 pheasant	 management	 plan,	 WMU	 2A,	 which	 includes	 the	 previously	 designated	Pike	Run	WPRA,	is	to	be	 opened	 to	 hunting	 male	 pheasants,	 and	stocking	of	game	farm	pheasants	 is	to	be	reinstated	beginning	with	the	 2012-13	season.” Under	 the	 WPRA	 program,	 the	 release	 of	 any	 artificially	 propagated	 pheasants	—	including	 Game	 Commission-raised	pheasants	is	prohibited.
