lanCaster — On the first day of the firearms deer season Deputy Charles Bewley  and I came upon a deer lying on the edge  of a main highway. We figured roadkill but  closer inspection showed that the deer was  freshly killed and field-dressed, and even  had a harvest tag properly attached to the  ear. I was recording the hunter’s information  from  the  tag  when  an  embarrassed  sportsman arrived and explained that the  deer had fallen off his trailer after hitting  bumps  in  the  road.  He  told  me  when  he  arrived  at  the  butcher  shop,  the  deer  was  gone.  He  then  frantically  started  to  backtrack. — WCO denniS r. Warfel, HOltWOOd

Jumped Ship

Beaver — I  was  checking  a  mentored  youth hunter during the extended antlerless deer season here in WMU 2B when he mentioned that he and his grandfather had  not had any luck this season. This young  man was outfitted with a backpack that was  as tall as him, a hat that was a little big for  his head and carrying his hunting chair. He  mentioned that today was going to be his  day, because he had his lucky bullet with  him and they had been seeing some does in a bean field. If optimism is any measure  of success, then this young hunter had his  limit. — WCO mattHeW g. Kramer, Beaver
            

One Excited Youngster

Forest — I recently bought a hoist for  hanging  and  skinning  deer,  but  when  I  finally  got  to  use  it  I  had  a  problem — I  didn’t have any place to hang it. My garage  was  full  and  I  knew  the  boss  (wife)  wouldn’t approve of me skinning a deer in  the basement. I must say the kid’s outdoor  swing  set  worked  wonderful,  but  I’m  a  little embarrassed to have contributed to  Jeff Foxworthy’s famous punch-line, “You  might be a redneck if you skin a deer from  your kid’s swing set.” — WCO daniel P. SCHmidt, tidiOute

Whatever Works

Visitors  to  SGL  169  in  Cumberland  County will be greeted by a new sign at the  headquarters building. The crew at Howard Nursery made the sign and the Food  & Cover Corps workers Tom Black, Dale  Bowman and Kyle Zimmerman erected it.  Daisy Troop 80798 planted flowers at the  base  of  it,  and  Gabriella  Nazario,  Laurel  Knight, Cheyenne Black and Carolyn Hardin, under the guidance of Troop Leader  Diana Nazario, completed the project. —  lmO Barry leOnard, eaSt Berlin

Welcome Sight

york — Since  being  in  the  northern  York County district for about 10 months  I have received several reports of fishers in  the  Dillsburg  area.  The  most  recent  one came from one of my deputies, Mike Shae.  He explained to me that his wife saw the  large dark and strange looking “cat” at the  end  of  the  driveway.  It  was  just  sniffing  around  by  the  mailbox  like  it  may  have  been a stray. Mike’s wife wanted to take it  in because she thought it might belong to  someone. Later another neighbor and Mike  identified it as a fisher. It’s probably a good  thing Mike’s wife didn’t take it in, or their  chickens might have started vanishing. — WCO Kyle Jury, leWiSBerry
