As a hunter, reading sign is critical to knowing what to hunt, where, when and even how.
Making Tracks
“H
EY, those tracks weren’t here when we walked in,” he said. I stopped and looked down. On this preseason scouting trip, we had passed by this muddy spot in the logging road earlier in the day and the turkey track impressions we saw were faint. It had rained the night before, so that wasn’t surprising. But now the mud showed a set of turkey foot imprints that were distinct, clean-edged. “The bird must be right ahead of us,” he added, whispering now. A bend in the trail kept us from seeing more than a few yards forward, but as we continued on, I noticed the turkey tracks seemed to be getting wider spaced. The bird was running. I was a few steps behind and when I caught up, he said, “I think I saw it take off. Down over to the left.” I gazed out over the jumbled treetops of the timber cut, but the turkey must have reached the woods on the other side. So I looked down at the path again, instead, and read the bird’s goodbye. The turkey’s tracks veered toward the edge of the muddy lane, just running on tiptoes. There was one last, partial 3-toed impression, a bit of a final claw scratch, and that was all. It had taken wing. On the hike in, we had stopped to take photos of the old tracks in the mud, because we were so impressed by them. Either a few turkeys had been walking the logging road often or a flock of lots of birds had walked it at least once. So many tracks overlaid each other that I scarcely recognized the crisscross markings for what they were. “I know one spot we’ll have to come back and try for a gobbler,” I said, and he agreed. Spring turkey hunting was soon to start and we put this location down as a high-priority option for the second half, hunt-all-day part of the season. This timber company land, open to the public, is just far enough away we don’t often get there for first light. But if we exhausted our close-to-home spring gobbler prospects, we’d have this “ace” in hand, all because we saw some tracks.
