could make out their waving tails. I
could feel a breeze in my face, so I knew
they hadn’t smelled me.
That was frustrating but experience told me to be patient because
the day was young. My instincts were
right, because at 7:45 I heard a branch
break down along the swamp. Having
learned from my mistakes, I instantly
knelt down behind the tree and
brought up my rifle before the deer
came into view. Soon I saw glimpses
of them coming up through the funnel
toward me, and I hoped they would
break into my shooting lane. Eventually a doe stepped out, turned head on
to me, and looked in my direction.
I had decided beforehand that I
would shoot a doe if I had a chance. I
was hoping for a crack at the big buck
but, first and foremost, I wanted to
procure some venison. I hadn’t had any
success during the early muzzleloader
season, so I didn’t want to pass up a
chance now. The doe was acting like
she noticed me, and I couldn’t see the
other deer well, because they were still
back in the brush. My only chance was
probably at her. The only problem was
making sure she was a mature doe. I
didn’t have any other deer to compare
her with. I had the crosshairs right on
the center of her chest, and after some
deliberation decided she looked big
enough and squeezed off my shot.
At the shot she turned and ran back
down through the funnel with the
other deer. I thought I heard her fall
and then all was quiet. She had been
about 70 yards down the strip in front
of me, and when I walked down there
and started following along her line
of travel I soon found drops of blood.
The drops quickly turned into small
puddles, and I looked ahead and spotMARCH 2013
ted her. I walked over to her and
stood there in disbelief.
I shouldn’t have worried about
her size; she was huge. I stood there
looking and started laughing at
my good fortune. I had never seen
such a big doe. It had been a nice
clean kill as well. I hit her right
in the center of the chest, and
the bullet exited just in front of
her hindquarter. After admiring
her some more and saying a quiet
prayer of thanks, I got her tagged
and field-dressed. Now it was time
for the work to begin.
I propped a stick in her chest
cavity to hold it open and aid in
cooling, gathered up my gear and
walked back to my truck. Once
there I cased my rifle and started
changing clothes. I had come prepared for success and had brought
some lighter clothing. I substituted
my wool pants and long underwear
for a pair of jeans. I also stripped
down until I had a T-shirt left
under my hunting jacket, and
changed from my wool hat to a
light ball cap. Now I was ready
