The two relaxed hunters
quickly transformed into quietly
scrambling ﬁgures, as we quickly
reset our decoys and moved into
shooting position. The plan was
simple as we got ready. If the gobbler came in alone, the ﬁrst shot
was mine. If he brought a silent
partner with him on his dash
from the other hillside, I had
the one on the left and Mickey
would take the one on the right.
The gobbles were thundering now, as the bird was on a
direct course for where we sat.
As I looked toward Mickey, he
signaled that he was going to
make one more call. He made
two quick strikes on his call. The
return gobbles nearly shook us,
and then a white head bobbed
above a log as the gobbler crested
the knob in front of us. Trying
to remain calm as my pounding
heart made my body shake, the

longbeard ﬁnally came into full view.
The roar of my shotgun quickly ﬁnished what I had originally set out to
do two days earlier. The mature gobbler with a 9-inch beard and 1-inch
spurs was the reward for remaining
patient through the early part of the
hunt and eventually controlling my
excitement at the critical moment.
The congratulatory handshake from
Mickey topped off an amazing hunt.
Although the wait-and-see approach to the morning’s hunt was
a drastic change from what I had
become accustomed to in previous
years, it was the key that day to turning hunting into getting. As I gain
experience from each trip into the
turkey woods, I’m ﬁnding that the
one absolute certainty in pursuing
wild turkeys is that it can be a very
uncertain venture. Always looking to
add knowledge from every hunt, the
lesson learned that morning was that
patience pays off.

It’s the Law:
Q: Hunters and trappers no longer need to display their
license in the middle of their back. When did the law change?
A: On Feb. 13, 2012, the law took effect to remove the requirement that
hunters and trappers display their license. The law was changed by enactment of House Bill 735, sponsored by Rep. Keith Gillespie (R-York), which
was signed into law by Gov. Tom Corbett on Dec. 15, 2011. The change in law
makes hunting less complicated, improves license management by hunters and trappers, and limits the inconveniences and troubles associated
with lost or misplaced licenses. The electronic license sale system, which
provided much smaller licenses than those issued prior to 2009, made
the need for licenses to be displayed antiquated. Now, hunters and trappers can simply put their licenses in their pockets or wallets, along with
the required secondary form of identiﬁcation, while aﬁeld. Presently, New
Jersey, New York and Wisconsin are the only states that require hunters
to wear “back tags,” which had become a common name for licenses.
