Good Deed Pays
Lebanon — Someone dumped cases 
of strawberry milk in aluminum bottles 
on State Game Lands here. Thanks to 
Scout Troop 432 from Jonestown the 
area was cleaned up. They also cashed 
in the aluminum and made a few dollars 
for the troop. If someone would have 
just taken them to the recycling center 
in the first place, they would have done 
the right thing and made a few bucks 
doing it.

Nice Gestures
P erry /J uniata  — As  is  the  case 
most years, this past deer season found 
us  collecting  a  lot  of  dead  deer  from 
various  sources.  Some,  not  meeting 
the current antler point requirements, 
were reported by sportsmen and turned 
over as mistake kills, while others were 
confiscated,  having  been  unlawfully 
taken. The folks at the Perry County 
Food  Bank  wanted  to  distribute  the 
venison to the needy, but the expense 
of processing so many deer would have 
been significant. When the members of 
the Ickesburg Lions Club learned of it, 
they stepped up and paid for the skinning and butchering of 10 deer. Kistler’s 
Butcher Shop in Loysville also helped 
out by processing the deer at a lower 
than  normal  cost.  Way  to  go  Lions! 
You have once again lived up to your 
motto of “We serve.”

Nothing Like Firsthand
Experience
training SchooL — A  recent  exercise  was  to  get  doused  with  pepper 
spray,  fight  off  an  attacker  and  radio 
for help. I thought I was pretty tough, 
so  this  wouldn’t  be  too  bad.  Well,  I 
found out that pepper spray does not 
care how tough you are. Shortly after 
radioing for help and finishing the exercise, I found myself buried face first 
in a bucket of water, trying to decide 
which  was  worse — not  breathing 
under water or being on fire outside of 
water.  I  learned  a  valuable  lesson  on 
the potency of pepper spray, and what 
a deterrent it can be.

APRIL  2013 

Death from the Sky
tioga — I  had  two  deer  struck  by 
lightning in a hayfield last year. I have 
heard of this happening but had never 
seen it. A doe took the main shot, her 
whole  body  was  covered  with  singed 
hair  and  the  ground  where  she  was 
standing had dirt and stones blown out 
from  under  her  approximately  eight 
inches  deep.  The  bolt  then  jumped 
from her to a buck that was standing 
about 15 feet from her and struck him. 
He had a singed belly from back end to 
the front of his chest. A gouge in the 
ground under him on closer inspection 
had  singed  hair  in  it.  The  property 
owner who called it in said that they 
were awakened around 1:30 a.m. from a 
bright bolt of lightning and a very loud 
clap of thunder that shook the house.
