in 1945, when the water level was
lowered in spring at the Linesville
spillway exposing mud flats along
the shorelines. Millet and smartweed seed were sown in these areas
and, after the plants matured, the
water level was increased to normal
depth. This process also permitted
plants such as rice cutgrass, spike
rushes and ravenfoot sedge to reclaim portions of Pymatuning.
Recognizing the value of Pymatuning’s wet areas, and nearby
Conneaut Marsh, the Game Commission began establishing a greater presence in Crawford County in
1946, less than a year after World
War II concluded. It’s first acquisition for what would become State
Game Land 213, was 135 acres in
Union Township, acquired with
funding made possible through
1937’s Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act, commonly known
as Pittman Robertson funding,
a federal excise tax on sporting
arms and ammunition that is appropriated annually to states. The
agency’s first land acquisition in

Pymatuning, where its holdings would
be SGL 214, was 68 acres in Sadsbury
Township. Conneaut Marsh land was
purchased with the intention of building another waterfowl conservation
area; 3,000 acres were sought.
Since 1946, the Game Commission
has amassed a total of 9,646.6 acres
through 120 land transactions on SGL
214. At Conneaut Marsh’s SGL 213,
the agency has acquired through 115
land transactions a total of 5,598.5
acres. More than 70 percent of these
land deals were made without federal
assistance. Some were condemnations.
Some were exchanges. It’s important to
point out that PR funding helped the
agency get a foothold in the region,
which was important to saving these
sprawling wetlands. But Game Commission staff for decades continued to
maintain the agency’s commitment to
acquiring and preserving these vital
marshy areas.
That vigilance to preserve the
ecological health and integrity of
these places is what has ensured their
existence for today and tomorrow.
Pymatuning and Conneaut Marsh
are woven intricately into Crawford
County’s heritage. They have always
been critical to wildlife, particularly
waterfowl, wading birds and shorebirds.
Their continued presence will always
be to Pennsylvania’s benefit.
Today, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural
Resources’ Pymatuning State Park is
21,122 acres. The Ohio Department of
Natural Resources’ Pymatuning State
Park comprises 3,512 acres. Combined
with the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s land holdings, this region has
about 200 square miles set aside for
conservation. That’s a commitment to
