Mercer — One  of  the  many  perks 
of being a deputy is the abundance of 
hunter stories heard and photographs 
shared by proud sportsmen and sportswomen. I was delighted when a former 
student  and  her  family  showed  me  a 
photo of Hannah’s first buck. I grinned 
from ear to ear as she excitedly retold 
how she had harvested the spike. One 
could tell she had perfected her story 
by telling it dozens of times. Looking at 
her spike buck Hannah laughed saying, 
“This is my ‘11-point’ buck.”

Taking Work Home

training School — While  on  our 
Christmas  break  I  spent  most  of  my 
time out hunting and trapping. It was 
to  be  my  time  away  from  studying 
game  laws  and  regulations.  It  just  so 
happened,  though,  that  one  day  out 
archery hunting not only did I locate 
a  baited  tree  stand,  but  I  also  came 
across an illegal trap set. This was just 
a reminder to me that it never stops.

Everyone Pitchin’ In

Members of the Millcreek Chapter 
of  the  National  Wild  Turkey  Federation and the Jefferson County Food & 
Cover Corps crew constructed a 1-acre 
deer-deterrent fence, and planted the 
interior  with  mast-producing  trees 
and shrubs as part of a NWTF Superfund Project on SGL 244. Volunteers 
from Wal-Mart even assisted with the 
project.  The  Millcreek  Chapter  also 
purchased fertilizer, trefoil seed, herbicide and lime to rejuvenate herbaceous 
openings.

Great Scenario

Montour — A  tip  of  the  hat  goes 
out  to  Chief  Gary  Roberts  and  the 
Washingtonville  Fire  Company  for 
their  assistance  in  rescuing  a  deer 
that was stranded on the ice of Lake 
Chillisquaque,  at  the  PPL  Montour 
Preserve. The doe was nearly 400 yards 
off the shore and unable to walk, and 
no one knows how long it had been on 
the ice. Donning cold water gear and 
using a sledge hammer to break the ice, 
two fire department personnel maneuvered a Zodiac boat to the deer where 
it was hauled into the craft and taken 
to shore. The deer was then carried to 
a secluded area to recover and get dry. 
After a few hours in the warm sun the 
deer regained its energy, stood up and 
wandered into the nearby woods. Chief 
Roberts  explained  that  he  had  been 
looking for an opportunity to train his 
firemen in performing an ice rescue on 
the lake, so this exercise fit the bill to 
a  tee.  Without  the  use  of  specialized 
gear and equipment, and the expertise 
of these dedicated and highly trained 
firemen,  the  deer  most  likely  would 
have died.
