a compound. “I learn slow, but I keep
getting better with my archery skills,”
Moffett said.
Ironically, it might be noted that
all those years of safe, incident-free
hunting, bowhunting and tree climbing may have conspired against Moffett. After all, if you’ve gone for six
decades without any problems, why
expect one to occur now? More than
one experienced bowhunter has been
lulled into complacency, taken risky
chances, and invited disaster in the
process. As a veteran hunter, Moffett
admits he should have known better.
“I’ll tell you one thing,” empahsized
Moffett, “I’ll never climb another tree
without a safety belt attached.”
At the end of November, surgeons
removed half of Moffett’s cancerous
left lung, but the prognosis remains encouraging. Now off oxygen support, he
is expected to regain a minimum of 90
percent of his lung function, and looks
forward to many more years of hunting
with his young grandson, James.
There’s an iconic line from the 1973
film, “Magnum Force,” in which Clint
Eastwood’s character, “Dirty” Harry
Callahan, observes, “A man’s got to
know his limitations.” Unfortunately,
for too many of us in the bowhunting
fraternity, our awareness of our limitations only occurs once they are exceeded and we pay the price. There was
no way Moffett, inadvertently testing
his own limitations, could have known
that, as a result of his exhausting climb,
he would pass out and plummet to the
ground. But he did know that the condition of his health was compromised
and, hindsight being 20-20, might have
selected a less rigorous approach to his
hunting plan that morning.
Now, months after the accident,
Moffett is feeling better but still
struggles with back and neck pain
while facing many months of ongoing
physical therapy ahead. At the same
time, he realizes he’s fortunate in that,
unlike so many others who have made
the same mistakes, he was not killed or
paralyzed as a result of the fall.
“I know too many guys who take
chances when climbing,” said Moffett.
“If the story of my experience, with all
the pain and injuries I’ve endured, can
keep someone else from suffering the
same fate or worse, then maybe it will
have been worth it.”

THE ANTICIPATION of that first gobble of the season is all the incentive needed for a dedicated spring turkey hunter to have made
the long hike up the mountain well before daylight, long before
many “logical” people are even awake at “dark-o’thirty.” There’s
just something special about hearing the gobble of a tom turkey
in the spring, so close its gobbling reverberates throughout the
woodlot and seemingly shakes the ground you’re sitting on. Such
is May, and oh, the joys of spring turkey hunting!
