reminded me of back home.
The camp sat on top of a knoll overlooking the Lehigh. The name of the
camp was Tiger Hill, and it was part of
a family tradition since the early 1920s.
Tony Ortolani — the patriarch of his
family at the time and overseer of Tiger
Hill — was from Long Island, NY. I
think he was an electrical engineer and
president of his own company. He often
used the camp as a stopover to rest and
try to forget his fast-paced life even if
just for one night. The first time I met
Tony he seemed a bit apprehensive
and was curious why I drove up their
secluded lane. I assured him that I was
only admiring the location and the
mystique of the old camp.
Tony told me how they had experienced some burglaries and vandalism,
and I would be most welcome to pull
in anytime I wanted. It used to be a remote location and got very little attention from traditional law enforcement
patrols. Cell phones were just coming
into being, and Tony said, “If you’re
interested there is actually cell service
on the pinnacle of our hill.”
It just so happened that Deputy
Bob Orbin started a small cell phone
group comprised of mostly deputies

and other Game Commission personnel. He
was able to negotiate a
better rate, which was
nice in those days.
My first cell phone
was a “bag phone.” I
started sitting on Tiger
Hill as often as possible, thinking that some
day I would hit pay dirt
from this perch. On
one particular night in
late October Deputy
Bob Orbin accompanied me on patrol. Bob and I spent a
lot of time together, and he was one
of the few true fellow Pennsylvania
Dutchmen I encountered here in
Northeastern Pennsylvania.
Tiger Hill was a quiet spot and on
a night with little breeze you could
faintly hear the fast water of the Lehigh, which is a narrow watercourse in
this area. There was little vehicle traffic
on the blacktop below, and there would
be an occasional airplane making an
approach to the Wilkes-Barre Scranton
International Airport. Other than that
the only noise was from peepers and
katydids, depending on the time of the
year. On this night, Bob and I sat in
the darkness with our windows down.
I noticed something moving near
my vehicle. I asked Bob if he saw what
seemed like a small ghostly shadow
slithering through the darkness. I
couldn’t help myself so I made a quick
sweep with my flashlight only to see a
feral cat peering back at me as it disappeared into a thick patch of mountain
laurel. I told Bob, “That cat has no
place on this mountain;” it was surely
the result of a drop-off, a common
occurrence back then and especially
