A Bunch in One Swoop

Tioga — WCOs Bob Minnich and 
Mark  Fair,  Deputy  Youmans,  along 
with two other volunteers, and I conducted the county’s first winter turkey 
banding operation. The group was able 
to make a successful “shoot” and snared 
nearly 30 turkeys with one shot from 
the  cannon  net.  Twenty-three  of  the 
hens were tagged and three were outfitted with GPS satellite transmitters. 
The  effort  was  to  mark  hens  for  our 
ongoing study.

Hard to Figure

snydEr — I  recently  closed  a  case 
where  an  individual  shot  two  antlerless  deer  during  the  first  week  of  the 
rifle deer season when it was antlered 
deer  only.  In  Snyder  County  antlerless deer are not in season the first five 
days. When asked why he shot them, 
he stated he thought they were in season. To make matters worse, he never 
purchased,  nor  even  applied  for  the 
appropriate antlerless licenses.

Takin’ Work Home

BErks — I was at a local restaurant 
one  evening  and  decided  to  play  an 
arcade game after dinner. There was a 
young boy standing next to me playing 
a  deer  hunting  game  with  his  father, 
and I noticed that he was “shooting” 
everything that came up on the screen. 
His father told him that he was only 
supposed to shoot certain animals, but 
what he was doing was okay as long as 
the  “game  warden”  wasn’t  around.  I 
couldn’t help but inform both of them 
that you just never know when a “game 
warden” is around.

Makes You Wonder

EriE — I encountered an individual 
standing  next  to  a  bridge,  fishing  on 
the last day of deer season. Not a big 
deal  except  that  he  was  also  within 
eight feet of two signs, one of each were 
located on each side of him that said, 
“Nursery Waters: fishing, wading, etc. 
is prohibited.” He said he thought that 
fishing in that hole was okay as long 
as  he  didn’t  stand  in  the  water.  The 
only  thing  I  could  say  without  being 
rude  was,  “Sir,  turn  around  and  read 
the sign and I would like to see your 
fishing license.”

It’s Fun, Too

Crawford — With  the  arrival  of 
summer many hunters, particularly in 
agricultural areas, turn their thoughts 
to  groundhog  hunting.  Most  farmers 
welcome chuck hunters, and it’s a good 
way  to  build  landowner  relations  to 
possibly solidify a place to hunt in the 
future. Introducing a young hunter, or 
even a mentored youth, to a relaxing 
afternoon along the edge of a field is a 
great way to build a solid foundation 
in  firearms  safety,  shooting  skills  and 
hunter ethics.
