Long in the Tooth

Bradford — I  received  a  call  from 
Jason Bolt, who was doing field work 
for one of the gas industry companies in 
the area about a dead bobcat that had 
a  radio  collar  attached.  I  was  unable 
to determine the cause of death, but I 
removed the collar and took GPS coordinates at the site. I then contacted 
region biologist Kevin Wenner to see 
if  we  could  get  some  information  on 
this bobcat, because the type of collar 
removed  from  the  cat  had  not  been 
used for years. Thanks to Game Commissioner Charlie Fox for still having 
some notes in his possession, for it was 
determined that this particular bobcat 
had  been  mistakenly  trapped  near 
Sylvania on the Tioga County line on 
November 19, 2001, and not far from 
its place of death. On that particular 
date,  now  retired  WCO  Bill  Bower, 
along with Charlie, attached the collar 
and released the female cat unharmed. 
That  would  make  this  bobcat  nearly 
11 years old at the time of her death, 
which  is  really  remarkable  for  a  wild 
animal.

The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation contributed more than $62,000 in 
the last two fiscal years for lime, seed, 
fertilizer and herbicide used by my Food 
& Cover Corps crews on some of the 
2,100 acres of herbaceous openings that 
we are managing in the portion of the 
elk management area within my group. 
Thanks to all of the RMEF volunteers 
who work hard to raise these funds for 
habitat work.

Times Have Changed

Berks — I initiated an investigation 
from  information  that  was  posted  on 
the “wall” of a friend of a friend’s social media page. The informant got a 
chuckle when I told him to slow down 
while  explaining  the  information, 
because I had started my career using 
a typewriter.

Swiss Cheese?

Potter — During a turkey trapping 
operation,  most  of  the  team  waited 
in  vehicles  for  the  sound  of  the  nets 
shooting over the turkeys to signal the 
time to move in to remove struggling 
birds  from  the  net  to  be  banded  and 
radio-collared. As our team moved in 
on some trapped birds in the Wellsboro 
area,  we  were  surprised  to  see  only 
two birds under the net. Confused, we 
immediately began to question WCO 
Rodney Mee’s ability to push the button.  He  told  us  there  were  at  least  a 
dozen birds under the net initially. As 
the team inspected the net we found 
dozens  of  football-size  holes.  It  took 
us a few minutes to identify voles and 
mice as the culprits.
