had been passed down to me from my
brother. I couldn’t hit the broad side of
a barn with that gun. I missed so many
rabbits I lost count. That first year was
tough with all those misses, but I truly
loved it.
My second year of hunting started
much like the first with too many
misses to count. That’s when the hunt
I remember best occurred. My father
always took vacation that first week of
small game season. He and my uncle
would hunt their favorite spots. I was
in school, wishing I could be out there
joining them on their adventures.
Imagine my joy when my father told
me we would go hunting after school.
I lived about a mile from school, so
my father picked me up and we’d hunt
the “Pits,” which was about 20 yards
out our backdoor. The area was an old
gravel pit that had been abandoned. It
was a game mecca. It had a tremendous
amount of regenerating new growth,
lots of wetlands bordered on one side
by a river and on the other a base of
a mountain with a few old crumbling
homesteads mixed in. If no other spot
produced game, you could always count
on the Pits.
The day at school was unusually

long. Each hour seemed like a day, as I
continually watched the clock. Finally,
2:30 p.m. arrived and I ran out the
door and saw my father’s car. I was so
excited to see him I couldn’t wait to put
on my hunting gear and get started. It
was a perfect fall day — clear blue skies,
except for a few puffy white clouds. I
remember there was a chill in the air;
the promise that winter was not too
far in coming.
I was carrying my trusty .410 and
my father toted a new Savage 20-gauge
over/under that my mother got for him
the prior Christmas. It had replaced his
trusty Winchester Model 12. Even then
I realized what a beautiful gun it was. It
had full and modified chokes, and my
father was a deadly shot with it.
We had about two hours to hunt
until quitting time. It would be a
quick hunt, but as time would prove,
one of my most memorable. I’m probably looking back with “rose-colored
glasses,” but if memory serves me right,
we ran into game almost immediately.
Regrettably, it was looking like the
same outcome as my earlier hunts — I’d
miss. I remember my father encouraging me to keep at it and not be disappointed. It didn’t take much, as I was
truly into this hunting thing. Besides,
the Pits always held rabbits; it also was
a good spot for grouse and woodcock.
At that time, the idea of me hitting
a grouse or woodcock was out of the
question. But I had known my father
to down quite a few.
A woodcock flushed at my father’s
feet, and he calmly dropped the timberdoodle. We proceeded to flush game
and I continued to miss. It seemed
as if rabbits were darting everywhere
in front of me, but they knew better
than to flush in front of my father. I
