was definitely keeping the ammunition
manufacturers in business and denting
my father’s wallet at the same time. But
he didn’t seem to mind.
There was one particular spot in
the Pits we called Bishop’s Swamp. It
was a swamp bordered by alders and
big chunks of what we called swamp
grass. They were like raised mounds
that the rabbits would use for cover.
One would kick these
mounds and suddenly
a rabbit would bound
out.
On a previous
hunt, my older
brother Mark
had made
a name for
himself by
nailing two
rabbits from
under these
mounds
with two
shots. Such
was not to
be my luck;
as I kicked a
mound, a rabbit
bolted out. I missed
again.
My father and I continued to hunt
toward the base of the mountain. This
was a good area for grouse. A grayphase grouse exploded out of a blowdown in front of my father. He missed
with the first shot, and the grouse
headed for a big dead oak. My father’s
second shot found its mark, sending
the grouse crashing to the forest floor.
I remember being so excited that my
father had pulled off the shot. We
admired the bird and then my father
slid it into his game pouch. It was time

to head back, as the sun was dipping
over the mountain. We had time to hit
one more cover before darkness would
shroud the Pits.
McCartney’s Hill was on the way
home, and we would have just enough
time to skirt the base of it, but not the
hill itself. McCartney’s Hill was named
after the McCartneys who once had an
old homestead on top of the hill. It had
burned down years before and
only the foundation was left. The
hill stood out as the highest
spot in the Pits. When the
Pits was an active gravel
pit, the operator had taken
all the soil surrounding the
hill. This made the Hill
appear higher than it
actually was. It had
a rock face on
one side that
looked over
a swamp
that often
attracted
wood ducks
during the
early fall. Its far
side was flanked
by a small brook. On
top of the hill was about
four acres of superb smallgame cover, including multiflora rose,
brushpiles and blowdowns. In front of
the hill, at its base, were large fields
of high grass. We didn’t have time to
tackle the best cover on top of the hill,
but we had just enough time to push
the high grass at its base.
As we approached the field, my
father offered me the use of his over/
under. I was thrilled. I was going to use
my father’s gun; that beautiful work of
art. It had found its mark twice that
