Two hunters. Two different views.
Can you please them both? If you
were a deer biologist, what would you
recommend?
After we drafted the 2009-2018 deer
management plan, we posted it on the
Internet and asked for public comment.
These two comments from more than
200 received clearly demonstrate a
challenge of deer management. Deer
are a wildlife species that bring out passionate viewpoints from people from all
walks of life. Unfortunately, we cannot
do what everyone wants.
Back to the earlier question, if you
were a deer biologist what would you
recommend? Would you change the
deer season back to what it was in the
1990s? Would you do what many of
our neighboring states are doing and
continue with a concurrent season?
What are your reasons? Can you defend them? The Game Commission’s
deer management goals are the reasons
behind our recommendations, and they
are defendable.
Pennsylvania’s deer management
program is guided by five goals that

are to manage the herd for healthy
and sustainable deer populations and
forest habitat, acceptable levels of
deer-human conflicts, and recreational
opportunity. The fifth goal is to provide
information and education regarding
deer management to the public.
These goals came directly from the
public. Deer are a public resource.
When deciding what the PGC’s deer
program should accomplish, it made
sense to ask the public. A group of public stakeholders, including sportsmen’s
groups, was asked to identify the goals
of the deer program. This group unanimously agreed to the goals we have
today. We also asked about the deer
management goals in surveys and open
houses, and got a ringing endorsement.
More than 78 percent of open house
attendees supported them. When we
asked thousands of deer hunters, a vast
majority also agreed with the goals.
And, when we asked citizens from
across Pennsylvania, again, a majority
agreed with the goals.
Strong guidance for deer management is also provided by the Pennsylvania constitution. A recent, independent review of the deer program
by the Wildlife Management Institute
(WMI) concluded that the goals were
consistent with the Commonwealth’s
