Trapper in Pennsylvania, it explains
that funds for the Act come from an 11
percent federal excise tax on sporting
arms, ammunition and archery equipment and 10 percent tax on handguns.
A majority of the money provides funding for the selection, restoration and
improvement of wildlife habitat and for
wildlife habitat research. One-half of
the excise tax on handgun and archery
equipment is used for hunter education
and target ranges. These funds are
collected from the manufacturers and
distributed each year to the states and
territorial areas by the Department of
the Interior.
The monies are distributed based
on the geographic size of the state and
the number of licensed hunters. States
must complete a project or activity
with their own funds and then apply
for reimbursement up to 75 percent;
states are responsible for the other 25
percent of the project’s cost.
So the next time you head out to the
local sporting goods store and your significant other asks where you’re going,
just say you’re going to support wildlife
and wildlife education. Oh yeah, don’t
forget to buy your hunting license.

placed on outdoor products with the
monies going to state wildlife agencies,
which help fund wildlife management,
would it encourage you to buy some of

tax also contributes to state HunterTrapper Education programs promoting
safe and ethical hunting and trapping

new sporting arm, bow, ammunition or

According to the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service website (www.fws.
gov), the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act, popularly known as the
Pittman-Robertson Act (PR Funds),
has generated more than $2 billion in
federal excise taxes, which have been
matched by more than $500 million
in state funds.
Senator Key Pittman of Nevada and
Representative A. Willis Robertson of
Virginia were the main sponsors of this
Act, and it was signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1937.
