Getting an Assist

“W

HAT do they call it,” I asked,
“when a hockey player skates
down-ice with the puck, but doesn’t
shoot the goal himself? When he passes
the puck at the last instant to another
player, who slaps it in. What do they
call that?”
I’m notoriously unknowledgeable
about team sports, which the other
three hunters in the car know, but for
which they forgive me anyway. We
were on our way from the deer woods to
the butcher shop, a nice doe on the rear
carrier that was fated to be transformed
into kielbasa, bologna, venison burger
and steaks. It had been a good day, with
good companions, and our mood was
borderline euphoric.
“They call it an assist,” I heard from
the backseat, left. “In hockey, if you
help another player make the score,
they credit you for it. You get an assist,
and that’s a stat that’s kept track of.”
“You can get an assist in other
sports,” said the driver. “Basketball

players routinely move the ball downcourt toward the basket and then pass
it at the last second to another player
who is set up under the basket.”
“Yeah, I love when they do that,”
said backseat, left. “Dribbling all over
the court and drawing all the attention
on them; no one is watching the other
guy, who is airmailed the ball and slam
dunks. Followed immediately by hang
time!”
“So any time a player helps with
a score in hockey or basketball, but
doesn’t make the score, it’s called an
assist?” I asked.
“Yep, as it should be,” said the driver.
“Then,” I said, with that opening for
the punch line. “Today, I get an assist!”
“Whaddaya mean?” said backseat,
left.
“You of all people should know what
I mean,” I said, turning in my position
in the front passenger seat to look at
him. “I get an assist for getting you
your deer. You wouldn’t have done it
