When you get out into the field, try
hunting when the weather is mild, and
make sure the new hunter has quality
hunting clothes and boots. Nothing
can dash spirits faster than being cold
and miserable. Keep hunts short, too,
especially if the action is slow. Sure, you
may have the patience to sit in a treestand all day without seeing something,
but many people can’t.
If you do stay in the field all day, take
a lunch break. My dad, brothers and I
would always visit Old Mr. Marks and
his sons for lunch during deer season.
We’d walk over to their stand and talk
about what we saw before heading back
to our stand to finish the day.
For the new hunter, try hunts where
there is bound to be a lot to do and
see — waterfowl hunting for example.
There are boats, decoys, dogs, blinds
and neat things happen near water.
Old Mr. Marks and others like him
did their part in making sure Pennsylvania’s hunting heritage lived on. Just
imagine what the future could hold if
each of us introduced just one person
to hunting.

OHN A. MARKS, or Old Mr.
Marks as I called him, died in 1993
at 79. However, before he passed, he
introduced his three sons (Jack, Dan
and Tim) and my dad, Bill, to hunting when they were just boys living in
Pittsburgh. Those four passed on what
Mr. Marks taught them to their wives,
kids, friends, relatives and now grandkids. My best estimate shows at least 35
people joined the hunting ranks thanks
to Old Mr. Marks.
These are impressive numbers and
Mr. Marks’ story isn’t unique. Most of
us started hunting because someone
took the time to take us. If you’re willing, here are a few tips to introduce
others to hunting.
There’s a big push to introduce
youngsters to hunting, but don’t limit
yourself to just kids. Adults could be
interested, and not only males. During a recent HTE class I held, half the
participants were females.
If the new hunter isn’t participating
in the Mentored Youth Hunting Program, make sure they take the required
HTE course to get certified. Help them
find a class and register on the Game
Commission website. If you haven’t
