T

HE TENTH MONTH of the year brings many opportunities for Pennsylvania
hunters. Statewide archery season begins on the ﬁrst Saturday. And while
most associate archery with hunting the rut in November, the ﬁrst few days
can be just as promising, as bucks can be patterned as they head to or from
their bedding areas. The middle of the month usually brings a decrease in deer
sightings, but that will change later in the month as the rut approaches.
The deer hunter also has the added option of trying to ﬁll antlerless tags during the early muzzleloader season that takes place in the middle of the month.
And for turkey and bear hunters, October is a month to locate the food
sources that will be critical to success for the seasons that are quickly approaching. While big game hunting builds toward a crescendo in Pennsylvania,
there is another way to spend some time this month — take a youngster
squirrel hunting.
The junior season starts on October 12, and the full foliage at that time
provides the cover that is necessary to be successful when hunting with a
youngster. Prior to opening day, ﬁnd an area with a good selection of mast
trees. Slip in early in the morning when it’s still dark. As the ﬁrst light starts
to radiate over the eastern horizon, it won’t be long before squirrels will be on
the move. The sound of a squirrel jumping into a branch full of leaves is usually
the best way to locate one in the moments before sunrise. If you’re already in
position, the squirrels will pay no mind to the stationary clump of ﬂuorescent
orange on the ground below. The young hunter will want to take a shot at the
ﬁrst squirrel that appears high in the limbs above, but recommend patience.
Eventually they will come down from the trees and start to feed on fallen nuts
and offer a better shot. Once a shot is taken and the squirrel falls within sight,
remain in position, as the noise of the shot is usually not enough to scare off
other squirrels in the area. With any luck, in a few minutes another one will come
into range and offer a chance to be added to the game bag.
By mid-morning the action will slow considerably. And chances are the
youth’s attention span will have reached its limit, too. As you head back down
the mountain, take pride in having participated in an event that studies show
is one of the best ways to create a new hunter, and also is one of the state’s
oldest traditions, dating back to the days when hunters carrying ﬂintlocks
honed their marksmanship on bushytails in Penn’s Woods.
