the mountain, by a farmer. Of course,
we had prearranged all this. Our gear
consisted of blankets and pots and
pans, plus our food and four or five bails
of straw for bedding.
"When we got through shopping
at Medix, we would start on a 15-mile
hike up Medix Grade and over the
mountain, to what was known as The
Mines, at the headwaters of Trout
Run. There we stayed in an old shack
owned by a group from Arcadia, Indiana County.
"Their group was breaking up and we
were invited to make a big camp full.
There were seven of us from Bridgeville
and about five of the owners.
"In those days, we stayed for the full
two weeks of deer season. The return
trip was the same, in reverse, and game
was shipped home by rail.
"Game was exactly as you described
in your article. Deer were everywhere
by the dozens. Grouse, rabbits and
snowshoes were a nuisance. They
were in season at that time until Dec.
15, but we never hunted them during
deer season.
"I wish I had that to do over again!
"We built our own camp on stateleased property and stayed until 1939.
By that time, roads were put in and old
roads repaired and we could get cars
in without much trouble. We enjoyed
some very good hunting, both big and
small game.
"But the roads made it easy for vandals to get in and they stole most of our
equipment, including our cook stove at
one time. Then we moved to Kinzua
and stayed until 1961, when we were
bought out by the government. Then
we broke up and it was a sad day, for
those were great years!"

We are very grateful for the job the instructors at the Kingston Vets &
Sportsmen's Club in Latrobe did with the HTE course on June 22, 2013.
They were organized and explained everything in a manner that everyone
understood. We are proud to say that now we have another hunter in our
family. Our son was so excited that he passed the test that he talked about
it the rest of the night. These wonderful instructors need to be recognized
for all their hard work they do in making this course a great start to something so wonderful that will last each student a lifetime.
