Puzzled, I stood still and barely had
time to shoulder my gun as a pheasant
erupted out of the field, ahead of Randy.
With the bird in my game bag, Randy
and I expanded our small game options
by adding pheasants to the list.
While we did plenty of hunting in
the fall, it was the late season when
Randy and I were all business. When
the temperatures dipped and snow covered the ground, we spent our days in
the hills of southern Bradford County.
The rabbits were plentiful and we often
came home with a limit.
One January afternoon as the season was drawing to a close, Randy was
making quick work of things. Within
an hour I had three rabbits and Randy
was quickly starting on a fourth. Not
wanting the day to end, I took a seat
on the frozen ground and watched as
she busted a rabbit from near a stone
wall and off into an overgrown field.
Randy's barking was constant as she
disappeared over a rise. And then it
stopped.
Fifteen minutes passed and Randy

was still silent. I figured she lost the trail
or the rabbit went in a hole, so I stood
up to go find my hunting partner. Then
I remembered what the old-timer said,
so I waited, hoping that Randy's nose
would sort things out. A few minutes
later I heard a bark off in the distance,
and then another before it became
constant again. Randy was headed my
way, and it wasn't long before I saw the
rabbit sneaking back along the stone
wall in the gray evening light. I connected on the shot and stopped Randy
when she returned, praising her like I
always did before carrying her back to
the truck to end the day. She was a determined dog. But such determination
made for a tired beagle, and as we drove
home in my old International Scout,
Randy laid her head on my lap and
snored contentedly. It was the perfect
ending to a day in the rabbit fields.
The years passed and I made my way
through college while Randy grew out
of the puppy stage. Later, the demands
of adult life limited my time to hunt,
but I managed to get Randy out several
