Y FIRST HUNTING experiences were accompanying Dad
squirrel hunting, or sitting with him
on his ladder stand during archery
season. Even when we did not see deer,
I enjoyed being out in the woods and
watching the birds and squirrels.
The summer I was 9, Dad bought a
Rossi Trifecta - a single-barrel youth
gun with three interchangeable barrels. It came with a .22, a 20-gauge
and a .243. I spent some time shooting with it during the summer under
Dad's supervision. In the fall of 2011, I
turned 10 and Dad thought I was ready
to do some hunting. I got a Mentored
Youth Hunting permit and hunted
squirrels, but I was looking forward to
deer season.
We did some scouting and picked
out a promising-looking spot on my
uncle's farm for the first morning.
Daylight found us waiting together in
a ground stand at the corner of a field
bordering a brushy hollow, and I got a
buck right away. We were back at the
same spot for opening day on 2012,
MARCH 2014

and again I got a buck with one shot
from my .243.
In March of 2013, I took my HunterTrapper Education course and then
became intrigued with the idea of turkey hunting. Dad and I scouted several
different areas, and agreed on a spot to
hunt the morning of the youth spring
turkey hunt day.
We started hiking up the mountain
in the dark at 5:30 a.m. As we neared
the top, Dad hooted several times and
after daylight he used a crow call to see
if any turkeys would gobble. We didn't
hear anything. He set up his decoy and
we sat and called for a while. It was
getting pretty windy and we weren't
hearing anything, so we walked for a
while, listening, occasionally crowcalling and exploring the area. Finally,
we decided to head out a side ridge
extending southward, thinking that if
we kept on the eastern side of the crest
we'd be out of the wind.
As we were setting up in another
location, Dad stopped, looked at me
and asked, "Did you hear that?" I
