Gobblers
the next to the last Monday of the
season. The sun tried to show and the
winds picked up. It was 2 p.m., but all
felt right, finally, for a serious hunt.
I dressed in my lightest camouflage - it was nearly 80 degrees and
steaming - and headed for a nearby
woods patch. I had seen several
gobblers strutting in the field next
to it off and on earlier in the season.
I quietly closed the car door and
walked the farm lane several hundred

yards before entering the swampy
part of the woods patch. Just before
getting to my favorite calling location, I used binoculars to scan the
field edge. A jake was preening not
35 yards away. I quickly sat down and
began calling.
A booming gobble resounded from
the swampy thicket in front of me.
The jake began walking off across a
thousand yards of plowed field. He
wanted nothing to do with the other
gobbler. After five or six in-my-face
gobbles, the kind that make the hair
on the back of your neck stand up,
I realized I could see only 10 feet in
the turkey's direction. I had to move.
I repositioned 10 yards away, with a
better view of the field's edge, and
settled down to enjoy the afternoon
silence and the mosquitoes. Not another gobble was heard. The bird had
obviously caught my slow-motion
change of location.
I packed up and went around the
swamp and approached the field from
another angle. Getting within about
100 yards of where I last heard him,
I settled down under a huge hemlock
to try to continue the conversation
we were having earlier. I quietly
stroked my long-gone father's box
call that is always with me. The gobbler boomed a distant reply.
A few pushes on my push-button
call received another instant response
and it was closer. I slipped in my
mouth call and made something like
a turkey noise. He gobbled close and
sounded out of breath from running
after me. I quickly set up my shooting
bipod and then placed the shotgun's
forearm on it, with the butt against
my shoulder. There would be no
more motion on my part.
