another old-guy affliction. They won
that round without the shotgun safe
being pushed off.
After dinner, I debated on napping, but decided that with the evening having cooled into the mid-70s,
I should give another favorite spot a
try. I had bought a second turkey tag
to let me continue hunting if I did
get lucky and shoot a first gobbler.
I drove to a favorite field edge,
arriving just before 7. I eased to
within a few feet of where I had
previously built a rock seat and stood
scanning the high grass and dandelion field with my binoculars. Suddenly
two mature gobblers came into focus.
I lowered the glasses, slipped in my
mouth call and sidled up to a nearby
oak. To see over the stone wall at
the edge of the field, I would have to
remain on one knee. I eased the gun
barrel through the field edge brush
and gurgled with my mouth call. It
didn't stop them; they were still feeding right to me. I allowed them to
close the distance to shooting range
and again tried to get a turkey sound
from the call. My call must have
sounded perfect, as they stopped to
raise their heads and look around.
The 3-inch shell's primer was
mashed, the powder exploded and a
charge of No. 5 shot was on its way.
The birds both ducked down in the
grass and then went airborne. I followed the one I had shot at and fired
again. His wings beat strongly as he
covered 100 yards, gaining altitude
over the field. Then he lost power.
His wings began to flutter as if he was
going to land. Instead he came to
ground like a falling helicopter.
I unloaded, laid down the gun
and sprinted, covering the high-grass
football field distance in record time,
for me. Arriving at the spot I had
been focused on, I placed my headnet on the grass and began my search.
The turkey was only 10 yards away.
I hoisted it for a look and noted
the similarity between it and the
previous day's bird. The scale showed
the gobbler weighed 20 pounds, 3
ounces, and his beard also was 9½
inches. Neither bird had spurs that
reached an inch. My pocket watch
read 7:10 p.m.
As I carried the turkey from the
woods, the sun was lowering in the
west. The sky was beginning to glow
rosy and the songbirds were sounding their final songs. Mornings and
evenings are quite similar in Penn's
Woods; they just happen in different
directions.

Washington state, but my heart is still in Pennsylvania. I especially enjoy the
Field Notes and the "Behind the Badge" features, having served 20 years as
a deputy in Franklin County. I retired in 1999 at 70 and the magazine brings
