elevated point, such as an overhanging
cliff, dock, abandoned bridge abutment

they wait for fish
to swim by their
"stand." However
,if the site is too
high it increases
shot difficulty and
retrieving the fish.
Bowfishing from
roadway and railroad bridges may
be illegal and is
certainly dangerous; it should be
avoided. As a general rule, bowfishing shots should be as short as possible,
and hunting from ground level or a
boat offers the best opportunity.
Average bowfishing shots are normally in the 15- to 30-foot range.
However, the depth of the shot can
vary from a fish with its back out of
the water to one several feet under the
surface. If you remember science class
from high school that water refracts
(or bends) light, which causes a fish
several feet under the water to actually appear closer to the surface than
it really is. Therefore, the deeper the
fish, the lower you have to hold to get
a hit. If you are shooting at fish in deep
water and are constantly missing, try
holding lower to compensate for the
light refraction.
Because most bowfishing shots are
close and quick, most archers shoot
instinctively, (no sight), however sights
can be used. Bowfishing gear may vary
from simple to elaborate, depending
upon your budget and interest. Recurve
bows, compounds or crossbows all are
all suitable. Bow sights, string peeps
and releases are more trouble than
help. While you can use a finger tab
or glove, I have
found it is best to
use rubber finger
protectors on the
bow string and
use bare fingers.
Most conventional hunting
arrow rests are
not suitable for
the rigors of bowfishing, and rests
are available that
are designed specifically for bowfishing. Bowfishing rests are heavy duty and will
handle heavy arrows under the difficult
conditions of water and mud associated
with bowfishing. Bowfishing arrows are
normally made from solid fiberglass
or carbon with a barbed point and
no fletching. Fishing arrows can take
quite a beating, depending upon the
area where you're bowfishing, which
can vary from soft mud to rocky bottoms. Look for an arrow that has easily
reversible barbs. Once you land a fish,
the barbs must be reversed so the fish
can be removed from the arrow and you
can get ready to shoot again.
Bowfishing points come in a variety
of designs and barb sizes. Special heavyduty heads can have three or four barbs
for heavy fish, but for carp, suckers
and catfish, the best choice is a medium point with a simple barb system.
Smaller points tend to create a smaller
hole through the fish, providing better
holding power as the fish pulls against
the arrow. If the hole is too large the
arrow can pull back through, resulting
