in a lost fish. This is not normally a
problem on medium to large fish, but
can be an issue with smaller, soft-sided
fish, such as suckers.
Bowfishing reels come in three
styles, a stationary drum, mounted on
the front of the bow that you handwrap your fishing line around. Next, is
a spincast reel with a crank specifically
designed for bowfishing. The third is a
bowfishing reel with crank that gathers
the line and stores it in a plastic container mounted on the side of the bow.
This system keeps
the line tangle-free
and ready for the
next shot.
The greatest
danger in bowfishing is tangled line.
Most bowfishing
line is 200-pound
test, but there are
heavier lines - up
to 650 pounds -
being used for
large game, such as
alligators and stingrays in other areas.
The line is attached
to the arrow, and if
it becomes snagged
or tangled on the shot, the arrow can
actually pull free, snap back and strike
the shooter.
Your line must be kept in front of
the bow at all times so it doesn't get
tangled with the arrow rest or the
shooter's hand. Make sure all fishing arrows are outfitted with an AMS Safety
Slide System. This system keeps the
line in front of the bow before the shot,
yet slides to the rear of the shaft after
the shot so the line is pulled from the
rear of the shaft for maximum accuracy.

While it is easy to put together a
bowfishing rig, there also are complete
outfits available, designed specifically
for bowfishing. While some recurve kits
are available, most feature compound
bows with stainless steel hardware,
water camo finishes, bowfishing arrow
rests, mounted bow reels and are
complete with an arrow rigged with an
AMS Safety Slide System. Complete
bowfishing rigs are available in various
draw weights suitable for men, women
and youngsters.
Some bowfishing
bows offer a letoff in the 60- to
80-percent range,
while others feature
a 20-percent let-off.
Because bowfishing
shots often happen
quickly, it is not
always possible to
come to full draw.
The lower let-offs
make it easier to
shoot from anywhere on the draw
length and still deliver enough power
for the shot.
While bowfishing during daylight hours can be done
all summer, the best shooting opportunities are normally during spring
spawns. However, bowfishing at night
offers excellent bowfishing all summer
and well into the fall. Night bowfishing
can be done from any boat upon which
lights are fixed. Those really into the
sport, outfit flat-bottom boats with
overhead lights, a generator and often
elevated, shooting platforms.
