HIS STORY begins in 2010
while I was a cadet at the Game
Commission's Ross Leffler School of
Conservation. Our class was well into
the yearlong academy. We were beginning a week of forensic training that
would provide us investigative skills
and knowledge for the work we would
do as wildlife conservation officers.
While looking at the training schedule,
one subject in particular caught my eye:
human tracking.
Chester County Wildlife Conservation Officer Scott Frederick taught that
block of instruction. The techniques
he used sparked my interest in visual
tracking and it continued to grow. Visual tracking is exactly what it sounds
like. You are using your eyes to identify
evidence of a person's presence on the
landscape. Everybody leaves evidence
of their presence when they walk, so
track evidence, called "spoor," is always
there. The trick is learning how to find
and read it. Many hunters and other
outdoor enthusiasts know something
about tracking and might have used it
during their outdoor activities. But the
world of tracking is vast and it takes
years of continuous practice to become
truly proficient. After using what WCO
Frederick taught, and realizing the
benefits of tracking skills, I wanted to
know more.
Upon graduating from the academy,
I began to look for more advanced
training in human tracking. WCO
Frederick assisted me in locating
accomplished instructors in human
tracking. As I attended different tracking schools and began using the skills
in my investigations, I learned other
agency officers were just as interested
in tracking. We all began attending
advanced tracking schools and train-

ing together when our schedules
allowed. We soon had a WCO tracker
team: Derek Daly, Chris Skipper, Matt
Teehan, Tim Wenrich, Frederick and
me. The skills we learned helped to
save the lives of two people in 2013.
On Aug. 18, I noticed on my
computer WCO Steve Hower, my
neighboring officer, was near the
Perry-Cumberland county line on
Tower Road. I called and learned an
elderly lady had gone missing and it was
