Mike and I made our way down the
mountain toward the voice and found
the missing woman underneath a
downed log. She had cuts and was
bruised, but was conscious and alert.
WCO Daly remained on the logging
road and called WCO Fetchkan to
report the find. We soon had plenty of
help to get her out of the woods.
Once the rescue was over, we went
back into the woods and started to
cut for sign where we had heard the
woman's calls for help. About 10 yards
up the logging road, I found evidence
of "dwelling," which is when a person
spends an extended period of time pacing
in one area and
causing significant
disturbance. It's
what lost people
often do to orient
themselves. We cut
for sign around the
dwelling area and
soon found a single
line of sign leaving the dwelling area
and heading down the side of the
mountain. After a 400-yard track, we
followed sign directly to where the
elderly woman was found.
Along the way, we located where
she had placed her purse underneath a
low bush. We returned it when we met
her later that day. She was doing well.
Just more than two months later,
my tracking skills again would be put
to the test.
At 8 p.m. on Oct. 24, I learned of a
hunter who had been missing for five
hours in the Tuscarora State Forest
in Perry County. Deputy Brian Barrick and I were working together at

the time. I soon received a request
for assistance from the Newport State
Police field office. On the way to the
scene, I asked Franklin County WCO
Doug Barrick for assistance. We arrived
at the scene at 9 p.m. and interviewed
the missing hunter's family. They
provided important information and
pointed out he had a very distinct walk
because of muscular dystrophy.
My fellow officers and I began to
cut for sign down a logging road and
soon found footprints that had special
features fitting the description of how
the missing hunter would walk. We
continued to cut for sign and soon
came to a clearing. I asked
the Barricks, who are
brothers, to cut for sign
around the edge of
the clearing in one
direction, and I
did the same in
the opposite direction. A short
time later Deputy
Barrick radioed and
asked me to check
out a partial boot print
they had found in some sandy soil. Sure
enough, it was our missing hunter's
print.
We continued to follow different
disturbances through the woods and
Deputy Barrick began to notice broken
branches along the right side of the
trail we were on. We were told the
missing hunter would often hold on
to something to steady himself while
walking. I aged the breaks and found
they were very fresh. I concluded the
hunter had walked down this trail and
grabbed onto the branches for support,
causing them to break. I called state
police and requested the helicopter fly
