side is perfect, but the other side is
botched up somehow.
One has a spike on the side I
couldn't see when I shot. One has
the other side completely broken
off. Two of them - while still 4-point
racks - have nice forks on one side, but
another side that's nothing more than
spikes with brow tines.
One year I shot a buck that had a
high, thick rack with matching forks
at the top of each antler. It ran off and
I saw it fall. I finally had my forkhorn, I
thought. When I got up to it, I turned it
over and saw it had all kinds of "junk"
going on below those two forks.
I counted six more points sticking
out every which way down there.
It's hard to complain when what
you thought was a
forkhorn turns out
to be a 10-point,
so I didn't. It
was one of the
most unique
racks I've ever
gotten.
When I was
just starting out, I really
liked how a symmetrical spike looked.
You might think it would be difficult
for a spike not to be symmetrical, but
I have a collection of them that says
otherwise. In fact, the only symmetrical one I own is from the last buck my
dad ever shot. Maybe he shot that one
for me, so I'd have at least one to put
on the wall alongside one with "horn"
spikes, several with one side longer
than the other, and one that has one
side that's nice, long and perfectly
shaped, and the other side short and
stubby, going off in a direction as if it
has a mind of its own.

Go figure.
Back then, it was thought spike
bucks were possibly genetically inferior
and that it was beneficial to take them
out of the gene pool. Nowadays we
know that's not necessarily the case.
Several factors come into play, and
what is a spike one year can possibly
produce a respectable rack the next.
But I can't remember ever sitting down
to a venison dinner that I didn't like.
My best luck with racks seems to be
with 6-points. I have at least five symmetrical 6-points. In fact, one of the
nicest racks I have is a
thick, even, longtined 6-point.
Every hunter goes
through that instant
of anticipation mixed
with apprehension
immediately after pulling the
trigger on
a buck.
While you
know it was
legal, you still
seek confirmation you won't get
until you walk up to it. Is that rack
going to experience ground shrinkage,
or is it going to be even bigger than you
thought it was when you shot?
Some years back, again before antler
restrictions, I picked out a deer in the
laurel looking directly at me. When
I first saw it without magnification, I
didn't see antlers. A check with my
binoculars revealed nice-sized spikes
sticking up between the ears, and
because I had only the first day to hunt
that year, I was happy to put my tag on
a spike.
At the shot, the deer disappeared
