A
HUNDRED YEARS ago,
Pennsylvanians were probably
just as incredulous as we are today
that a species as prolific and welldistributed as the passenger pigeon
would simply cease to exist. It was the
20th century. As a country we had
begun to care greatly about wildlife.
And wild pigeons once blocked out the
sun as they flew overhead in migratory
formations that stretched for miles.
Nonetheless, they were gone. The
last was Martha, a 29-year-old bird that
spent her final years at the Cincinnati
Zoo. Sept. 1 will be the 100th anniversary
of her passing, which marks the extinction of passenger pigeons. Sadly, the zoo
also would be home to the last of North
America's Carolina parakeets, which
went extinct in 1918. Both birds came
to Pennsylvania. Passenger pigeons
nested here most years.
It's hard to come to grips with the
passenger pigeon's extinction, considering it involved what was probably the
most abundant wild bird to inhabit the
continent. It is believed by some that
passenger-pigeon populations grew to
incredible numbers after Old World
diseases decimated Native American
populations. Then, for centuries, the
birds and America's growing population - from Jamestown forward - lived
in a semblance of relative harmony.
But as civilization grew, the pigeons
became more of a resource than a
natural sideshow in spring and fall.
Railroads and the telegraph eventually would create a supply system that
fulfilled society's growing appetite for
wild pigeons and their flightless squabs.
But that progress, so important for
young America, would indirectly and
innocently enough become the roots

help topple a population that once
numbered an estimated 5 billion birds.
"Here was a species so perfectly fitted to its environment and to existing
conditions that, although a pair laid
but one egg at a setting, or two at the
most, and although its enemies were
legion, it had increased in the course of
time to such an extent that it bade fair
to overrun the continent by sheer force
of numbers," wrote W. E. Clyde Todd,
in his Birds of Western Pennsylvania.

record of human cruelty, avarice and
