area for grouse is the presence of
forested openings.
There are food plots constructed
during the refuge era that continue to
be planted in small grains and legume
mixtures, providing areas for grouse to
acquire protein from both plants and
insects. Retired timber-haul roads, skid
trails and log landings on the management area offer additional locations
that potentially can be planted in
clover or otherwise managed to provide future small herbaceous openings
adjacent to nesting areas.
GMA GoAls And objectives
One of the primary goals of this
grouse management project is to
increase the amount of young forest
habitat it comprises to about 25
percent of the project acreage. This
is being accomplished by selecting
5- to 20-acre patches of forest to clearcut to regenerate the young forest
habitat grouse desire. These areas are
selected based on size class, tree-species
composition and relationship to other
patches and herbaceous openings.
Given the relatively small size of the

patches and the low market value of
small-diameter trees, most of the forest
patches are cut non-commercially by
Food and Cover crews, or through a
commercial timber-sale contract.
Not all cutting involves clearcutting or regenerating forested areas.
Many trees and shrubs in healthy
young forest habitat benefit from trimming or cutting the trees around them
to allow more sunlight to reach their
leaves, and give them more space to
grow. Many such species are reserved
in clear-cuts or cut back, or released,
in stands that are not slated to be
regenerated. Aging sumac, witch hazel,
and other beneficial shrubs that have
low vigor are felled to produce healthy
stump sprouts.
All proposed cutting areas are inspected prior to felling to look for the
presence of hay-scented fern, striped
maple and other noxious or invasive
species. If these species are left unchecked, they may inhibit the growth
of the native or otherwise desirable
trees, shrubs and plants in the stand. In
most cases where fern or striped maple
exist, these problematic species are
treated with backpack herbicide mist
blowers or handheld
sprayers.
