Sometimes the decisions are good
ones. Sometimes they're not. But if
you're more than 70 years old, you're
only looking for winning years in the
fur shop. Clunkers just can't justify the
considerable effort.
Now 71, Ferris had his best year of
buying fur in the 2012-13 season. It was
supposed to be his last. He even told
his regular customers as much. But the
magic of that season - he even sold fur
in storage from previous years - brought
him back for more.
"The best year in 40 years was 201213 season," said Ferris in a January
interview in his fur shop. "And that was
one of the reasons I came back this year.
After two weeks, I
wished I wouldn't
have!"
He laughed
it off. Anyone
who's been in the
fur business 40
years knows how
it works. Back in
the '80s, when
the fur market
collapsed after a
strong run earlier
in the decade,
Ferris made some
decisions that
didn't work out.
It would become
his worst time in
fur buying.
"It was in
the '80s, I had
raccoons and had the opportunity to
sell them and make a little profit, and
decided not to," he said. "I decided
to ship them to Canada, and it took
about three years for them to sell, and
I probably lost $5,000 on those coons.

But overall, I probably still had a little
profit off the other stuff. It wasn't a loss.
I don't think I ever suffered a loss in one
given year. But I never got rich either!"
Once again his laughter filled the fur
shop. It's one of his trademarks, along
with his eagerness to swap stories with
customers - who mostly are regulars
and friends - and to help trappers encountering problems on their traplines.
He's always enjoyed the company of
trappers. A former president of the
Pennsylvania Trappers Association and
a member of its Hall of Fame, Ferris has
been tied to trapping since he began
the sport in the early '50s. He remembers those early years well.
"The first year
I had four traps
and I didn't catch
anything; and
then the traps
got stolen!" Ferris
recalled. "The
next year, we got
more traps and
caught a muskrat
or two.
"We were
selling on the
carcass. Then
one day I went
to my cousin's in
Fredericksburg
and he showed
me how to skin
two muskrats and
that was all the
schooling I got.
From there, I basically taught myself
the rest of it."
The ensuing 40 years, immersed in
all things trapping, with plenty of hunting and fishing mixed in, certainly have
left Ferris many memories and friends.
